Is Mag 2C brighter than TL3 Xenon?

I have a stock mag 2C with the krypton bulb and the mag site says
its 14,000 CP, and the Streamlight TL-3 that I want is [FONT=arial , helvetica]11,500 CP.
How can this be? Is it really brighter?

There is no way a stock 2C Maglite can be brighter then the TL-3.

Candlepower numbers are usually only used to signify throw(in which the TL-3 also wins by a big margin). Maglite seems to calculate them and hence the numbers can be much higher then reality.

Going by these two reviews, Maglite 3 and 4D and Streamlight TL-3, the TL-3 out throws and out lumens the Maglite 3D(around 4x the output), so it should be brighter then the Maglite 2C.

But if you mod the 2C to a ROP, then the TL-3 would be dimmer.

Welcome to this world........

If you are comparing a stock 2x C Maglite with a pair of primary cells giving 3V supply to a 3V lamp, to a stock Streamlight TL-3 with 3x primary cells giving 9V supply to a 9V lamp.....the TL-3 will be substantially brighter than the Maglite.

Thanks for the info and links, Gunner. Now I see.

Unsolicited Opinion Time : the TL-3 is a great value straight outta the box.
Reliable, small, bright, inexpensive at <$50.
The AA maglite TL-3 conversion has a wow factor for most "outsiders" because most people have seen how anemic the light output can be from one of them --- and the total price is about the same.

So many option...:) Seems the TL-3 is way better than a 2D cell.

With 100% fresh alkalines with a brand new bulb it wouldn't surprise me based on those pictures if the mag had a slightly higher peak beam candlepower rating (brightest single spot of the beam). As you can see from the picture though, the TL3 is outputting WAY more light. This is why Surefire started using lumens as a comparison number, they put out way more light than larger D-cell lights with stock bulbs, but candlepower wise the D-cells with their large smooth reflectors are difficult to beat. Even now with upgraded bulbs overdriven past their specs they're absolutely beastly.

If you mod the TL-3 with a Carley H1499 bulb and a couple of AW's protected
17500 Li-Ion cells, you can get even more performance - this mod leaves the Maglites
in the dust.
