Is secondary spring necessary on Surefires?

I have a cree dropin that I ordered to use in my SF 6P. The larger outer spring does not allow the head to screw down completely. Can I remove this larger outer spring and still have it work correctly? What purpose does this larger spring have?

That spring provides the negative contact. It is not used on Wolf-Eyes and some others, but is needed on SF.

I think i beg to differ!
if your drop in is a DX one, i think you need to remove the outer spring for it to work in a 6P. I certainly removed the outer spring in mine, and if I recall correctly thats the general consensus on the drop in thread.
For some reason search is not working for me now; its the longest thread on the $12.50 (now cheaper) DX drop in.

I took the spring off of my Wolf-Eyes drop-in and it still works in a 9P.
