dose any one know if there are any 1D lights on the market

done a search on google but only coming up with modded lights

No, there are about 50 of them. Yes, they're all modded.

No mass-produced ones, that I know of.

Really, there's not much point, for several reasons.
  • There are no 1 to 1.5V bulbs available with serious output.
  • Mass-market lights are designed around alkaline cells, which don't handle high current well. This means that 1C or 1D will lose substantial capacity if it delivers similar output to a 2 or 3 cell light.
  • And there's not much market for something 2/3 the size, and no better fit for most pockets, than a 2-cell light, but with only half the output. (Taken together, B and C explain A.)
  • Because boosting 1.5V to ~3.5V for an LED is usually rather inefficient, something like 3xAA in the same size will have comparable performance, even though it's only about 2/3 the capacity, and 4xAA will beat it. For incans, 3x or 4xAA are equally viable, and could get around A, but don't have the efficiency gain.
You posted this in the incan forum, so D is semi-inapplicable, but I'm listing it anyway for completeness.

The only 1D incan I know of is the "Eveready One".

Rather like an E250K with a shorter barrel.

It comes with a 1.2V krypton PR globe (and here we are in serious "why bother" territory. At 1.2V, the difference between vacuum and krypton is marginal indeed!) and runs, of course, off a single D cell.

Eveready marketed it as an emergency torch, using the rationale that in a crisis, you should be able to scrounge ONE good battery!

But it wasn't a success. Not because it was too dim, the big reflector and quality globe made it satisfactory, no the real reason was more funsamental. 1.5V just does not give enough voltage headroom for the traditional sliding-contact type switch arrangement.

Result? The torch flickers and won't stay on.

Eveready then used the tooling to create a 4AA, single-5mm-LED curiosity, that, to get a decent beam out of a single LED, used a moulded bi-convex lens to create the worst beam of any torch I have ever seen. But the shell and battery carrier allowed me to create a very nice, stubby 4AA-KPR113 torch, perfect for sitting on the fusebox.

From time to time, I have seen a 1D transparent or translucent plastic flashlight made in China at thrift stores. Generally, fairly low end construction. It used a PR bulb [rated, presumably, to handle a 1D battery]. I believe the colors that I have seen have been yellow, green, or a yellowish-green. Once again, nothing to write home about.

Nice!

But now I may have to get one and hotwire it with a Li-ion D or 26700, and maybe a transistor to take the load off the slide-switch...

Hi
i am really just looking for a 1D size host to play around with maybe experiment with various bulbs and run it on 3AA to 1D
i would love to get one of my 2D mags cut down but i do not have the tools or skills to do this and do not know of any one over here in the UK that dose and to get one from over seas would be way to expensive i would imagine
thanks for your help anyway
Barrie

If you just want to experiment with the battery format and the host itself isn't that important, you can always just use a D cell spacer in a 2D Mag. Then you have a complete 1D/1.5 volt host.

Hi Barrie,

Why not get a 4AA light and use a dummy AA. You can get these in dollar stores -- where the rubber meets the nose; or get higher quality Dorcy based models at Kmart or Sears, etc.
