Re: Isn\'t this the Holy Grail that some are searching?

That's the one. Unfortunately, 550mAH is a bit low but for non-overdriven 1W, it should give about an hour or so of runtime. I remember a picture on PK's old site of a very similar 17345. Next question is how do we get 'em? Thanks for this info btw.

Re: Isn\'t this the Holy Grail that some are searching?

How much interest would there be in a group buy of them? I could put one together if we wanted a few hundred cells...

Re: Isn\'t this the Holy Grail that some are searching?

This looks good except for one small problem. The 3.7V Li-Ion cells I use charge to 4.0V when fully charged. So, if you were to use these in series in say a TL-3 that uses 3 of them, you would be getting 12V instead of 9V. Could make for a MUCH shortened bulb life (if one wasn't prepared). But, if your torch could handle them, AND you had the means to charge them, they look VERY nice.

Re: Isn\'t this the Holy Grail that some are searching?

I'm definitely interested! This LiIon+Downboy 400+R2H in a Firefly would be a the perfect rechargeable keychain light.

I would probably take 6.

Actually, using a single Li-ion, a simple resistive ballast would be more efficient and $20 cheaper.

Doug, I agree /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
The only disadvantage is the not regulated output.

Re: Isn\'t this the Holy Grail that some are search

I own an ARC 1xAA twisty. I aquired a Li-Ion AA sized battery which is 3.6v 650ma from a battery pack. I replaced the original(first run) circuit with my own direct drive. In direct drive the Luxeon sucks around 800ma - 1200ma. Which is pretty high so I had a 1ohm resistor in series that brings it down to around 400ma or so. These values are not super accurate, they are just figures I can remember when building.

I've been using it for nearly two months, it's a great edc. I think these CR123 Li-Ion are very handy and nice, they should match my 650ma AA. I haven't done any timing on runtime at all. So I am going to do it tonight and hopefully I can post some results we can get an idea how good it will work. I am fighting a bad flu at the moment so please bear with me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sick.gif

TheFire,

I'd be interested in a group buy. You're really gonna put me in the doghouse for this /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

koala,

Man, you need to get some rest. Surfing CPF to me is not restful, it's stressful thinking about what to blow my money on next /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Isn\'t this the Holy Grail that some are search

CM,
yes it's indeed stessful, it makes me think what I have to mod next /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

In order not to hijack this thread, I've started another topic for the runtime. Personally, for size, I am willing to sacrifice the runtime and use the Li-Ion CR123.

Re: Isn\'t this the Holy Grail that some are search

Count me in on those 17345s too - any price yet ?

Talking ´bout stress - you guys really are killing me - all that talk about the KL1´s at 700ma made me finally re-open my cheerished modded Q3K HD-KL1 - but the middle section just didn´t turned even when heated quite a bit, finally the aluminum inter-section gave way before the threads came off when I used the opening inside there as a handle - but only after I managed to move the coil sideways /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Now its in the local ER for major surgery /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: Isn\'t this the Holy Grail that some are search

Klasu,
I the circuit in that KL1 to totally messed up, you'd be surprised at how well and BadBoy or DownBoy fits in there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I've done the same thing in the past.

Re: Isn\'t this the Holy Grail that some are search

Tony,

thank you for the good idea, so far I still hope the guy with better eyes and more stable hands can get that wire from the coil back to where it belongs or where at least it gets what it needs to get - we discussed he´ll try to put it to the one leg of the R10 where it *looks* its routed to anyway - and then he´ll also put another 1 Ohm on top of the 1R0 to get to the "magic" 700ma and with thumbs pressed I will try to fire it up and we´ll see. Its just a PITA to solder inside that head not being able to get it apart /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Re: Isn\'t this the Holy Grail that some are search

I've received the following reply from them:

----------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for your enquiry.

Rechargeable Li-ion battery 17345 is teh replacement of CR123A for camera.

The basic specifications are as follows:

Nominal voltage: 3.7V.
Nominal capacity: 450 mAh.
Max. continuous discharging current: 1200 mA.
Standard chargeing: 100 mA for 5 hour and the highest charged voltage is 4.2V.
Rapid charging: 300 mA for 2 hour.
Cycle life: more than 500 times.
Diameter: 16.50---17.0 mm.
Height: 34.5mm.
Weight: about 12 g.

We also provide the corresponding charger (input is 90--240V).

FOB China:

Li-ion 17345------------US$3.50/Pc.
Charger-------------------US$4.50/Pc.

Delivery lead time: within 12 days.

----------------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately the cheapest shipping rate is 45$! Therefore this makes only sense with a group buy.

Re: Isn\'t this the Holy Grail that some are search

Did you quote for the minimum order? Most manufacturers have a minimum quantity order.

I don't know which camera he/she is refering to but I know 4.2v peak is very unhealthy for any CR123A camera.

Re: Isn\'t this the Holy Grail that some are search

They didn't quote any minimum order. I asked for 10 LiIon's and one charger and that was ok. The only problem is the shipping costs.

I'm thinking about organizing a group buy, but I don't know if it makes sense to do it from germany. The next few weeks I'm additionally to busy since I have a job change on december first...

Yes, you would probably kill some camera's /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif, but for our use it would be great.

Re: Isn\'t this the Holy Grail that some are search

4.2 volts from the battery should drop quite a lot since the maximum discharge rate is so litttle compared to a normal 123, normal 123s can take 3 amps and above this can't even provide anything above 1.5 amps under the manufacturer's recommendation. I sure don't want this exploding in any light.

Re: Isn\'t this the Holy Grail that some are search

nerd, your right..

Splendidbattery(CR123 17345 3.7V)
Capacity(C) = 550mah
Max discharge current 2.5C = 1.375Amps

Recently, there was a groupbuy on HyperCells
(AA 14500 3.7V)
Capacity(C) = 750mah
Max discharge current 1.5C = 1.125Amps

Not so high drain batteries but splendidbattery has higher discharge performance.

Highest discharge current I've seen on a 18650s is 3.0Amps. This explains why Li-Ion is not suitable for high current demanding incandescent lights unless they are parallel wired.
