I'm probably the only CPF member here without a voltmeter and I don't have a light to test them out yet.

My DBS should ship this week and I've never used 18650 cells before.....

I also picked up an UF 139 to charge them.

definitely get a multi-meter.

the cells SHOULD come ~3.9V or so, partially discharged,

I hope you got protected cells.

Yeah they're protected.....so should i stick them on the charger until it turns green or what? :dunno:

I'd throw them on the charger. If theyre reasonably charged, shouldn't take too long till the green lights come on.

Be careful with the 139 charger, i haven't but other CPF users have had theyre batteries overcharge. Best rule of thumb is not too leave the batteries in the charger after the light has turned green, otherwise some of the 139 chargers continue to trickle charge and over charge the cell.

I never leave my 139 charger unattended and when the lights go green, i just pull the cells out!!

Ok, how long does it typically take to charge fully charge 18650's?

Sorry for all of the questions guys, I really appreciate the help!

Topping them off... up to an hour. Full charge... 3 to 4 hours. THese cells do better when charged frequently. Even though they are very good at holding a charge when not used, I'd charge them every week or two even if you just play around a bit with the light.

I always thought it was good to drain li-ion batteries periodically?

Nope, that'd be NiCd cells, LIons will be destroyed by deep discharges. It's best to keep them around 60% (if my sources are accurate) for storage, and of course charge them up when using them. Remember that they lose ~20% capacity per year from the date of manufacture. Don't worry about "memory effect," that was controversial anyway but it applies to NiCds primarily.
