KD driver - what is grey putty on board?

I recieved this driver today.
S007542 5.5V~12V 5-Mode Circuit Board for P7/MC-E Flashlight
I looked through the posting in the market place and it doesn't mention that the driver is in two pieces:(, let alone that the contact board, well take a look:

:confused:The pieces arrived laying side by side on bubble wrap (that is to say, the material has zero function for shipping). The cpfmarket post confirmed that batt +'ve is soldered to center post of driver, -'ve to outside edge. Not sure how I'd solder + from the first board to the 2nd with-out removing the material.

The grey stuff is like putty, a bit soft but retains its shape.:sigh: I was dreaming this was a new potting compound - during 'burn in' it forms a thermal pathway around all components. But we all know that's not it.

so I sandwich the two board together. Do they have to be under compression or just 'stick' one to each side of the pad?
 
Just a guess, I think it's an isolator so when you drop your cells in, it doesn't crash into the driver? I'd think you'd have to remove it to get the wire soldered onto the backside though? Good question for Jerry.

re: Jerry -well I read through the 5page market place post and...well...I felt I would get a more direct answer here. Aircraft800, thanx for encouragement though, I will write him (KD).

--Yes, it seems it will come off easy enough to solder, and while pics show wrong angle there is a whole through it (1/4") that looks like a wire run.

bshanahan14rulz-don't know how I'd attach one board to the other

I'm not sure what I'll do with this driver yet. So far no user feedback either, I'd hope someone would give a heads up as to what this stuff looks like after a few months.

I think aircraft is on the right track. some kind of shock-absorbing spring pad to account for varying cell height or something
 
hey,

I ordered the same, but I have really no idea where to put what! where is battery plus and minus, and what do I connect to the LED?

I hope somebody can help!
