KL-1 vs KL-3

Help Support Candle Power:

The KL3 feels top heavy and makes the E2 body feel too-short with McGizmo's E2C adapter.

I think the KL3 , McG's adapter and Doug Speck's brass UBH will feel perfect in my hand. Same thing for the UBH, the E2C adapter, and a Turbohead with an N2 LA.

My KL3 is noticeably brighter than my KL1.

I also look forward to using the KL1 on the UBH with two NiMH rechargeables.

This_is_Nascar,

I believe the KL3 is driven harder so may be brighter. I also wonder if the considerable increase in surface area will allow the KL3 to run significantly cooler for long run times? I believe that luminous output from the LED is diminished considerably with heat. It might be interesting to do a light level check at start up and then at intervals until thermal steady state is reached with both configurations. As is typical, there is likely more variation between individual Luxeons than might be seen in comparing two actual LED's, each in a different bezel and driver configuration (KL1 vs KL3)

I agree with Lemlux that the balance of the KL3 is better on an E3 pack than on the E2. On the E3 platform, I personally prefer the look and feel of the KL3 over the KL1. Perhaps I prefer the CG closer to the head-tube junction than most.

McGizmo:

I should have mentioned that I also like the feel and balance of the E2 with your your E2C adapter driving a P61 as the most compact > 100 Lumen thermally non-self-destructive light combination I have.

I should also say that I can't imagine the E2C adapter connecting an E1 to anything feeling comfortable. I did enjoy and chuckle at your playful pictures connecting an E1 base to the biggest hunks of SF aluminum you could screw over your E2C adapter.
