KL1 high dome?

Ahhh, finally. It's about time and I'm glad Surefire is using high domes in their "low end" lights /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Chop, how well centered was the light? Centering takes time in the KL1 with high domes and I'd be surprised if Surefire uses the same method us modders use. However, the KL1 has no provisions for centering the optic to the LED so this has got me real curious.

LifeNRA,
Check out the reflectors that Wayne J is selling at Elektrolumens. They drop right in over the stock heatsink, although you may have to move the wires around to get it to sit right.

CM,

I'm sorry, but I have to admit that I quite checking the beams on stock KL1's. I had torn this one apart without even turning it on. I just put the optic back on it to take a look at it to confirm the HD beam pattern because I thought I was seeing things. So I don't know if it was centered or not.

If this is the "version 2" of the KL1, soon to be followed by "version 2" of the KL3, I know I'm gonna buy a few to hotrod. Sure the luxes may not be perfect, but the ones I've seen do get whiter when you drive the hell out of 'em. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

BTW,

I don't know who's selling these, but the CPFer that I modded this for, said that he got his from jcciv.

it is an evidence of surefires incapacity if they still use this blue tinted 1 watt LEDs in the KL1!

newcomers in cr123 and LED technology (read Peli/Streamlight) do much better work in that area.

Chop,
Hope to try the new hot rod out this evening. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Doc,

I took it out last night and compared it to my modded KL4 and the beams were just about indistinguishable. I think you'll like the end product. If not, let me know.

I just received a brand new KL1-HA-WH from "mrlumen" on Ebay. It's serial number is A09071. I can positively confirm, it is a much improved version of the old KL1. It is much whiter than any white KL1 or KL3 I own.

OK, I'm going to play ignorant here as I just came off the boat but what is the mod(s) to the KL1? I have a white KL1 that I pair on my E1 and use quite a bit and a purple KL1 that just sits around.

Oldgrandpajack>I had mine since January from TADGear (#A10947). I also had one from jjciv (#A08711) and still in transit to Chop for modding. I have no idea how an LD/HD would look like, but both has a little purpleish tint, and is bright enough. Hopefully Chop can confirm if the one I sent has an HD on it.

You know, I was just going to start a new thread to share my "discovery" of a high dome in the KL1 that I just bought! Veeeery interesting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

I can confirm that my KL1, fresh out of the sealed SureFire baggie, contains a high dome. Serial number of my KL1 head is A08971, and I got it from jcciv. (Thanks John!) Color is very white. There's a circular hotspot perfectly centered within a square reflection of the LED's square die, then around that a wider circle of dimmer spill light. I'm quite pleased with this head.

If I were going to get VERY anal retentive, I'd describe the hotspot itself as very slightly "warm" (meaning just a touch of yellow tint in the white color) and the square die reflection just a bit blue-tinted. I believe these color anomalies might be caused by refraction through the optic. Let me restate, though, that these are VERY minor issues, and in the big picture I'm thrilled with the color and beam quality out of this KL1 head. Regarding bin code, if I were to guess I'd say this is probably a Q3J high dome.

My new KL1 S/N A09360 beats the snot out of my old one S/N A12268 for whiteness and beam pattern.

I would have thought different given the serial numbers alone.

The new one seems to use a different optic too...more like the NX05..the LED die square is apparent at closer range like I see with other NX05s..the older one is tighter more like an NX01..which makes sense for a LD...but it is also more green/blue.

Maybe I'll try to take them apart and play with some other optics...

I bet the new KL1 screams tight with an NX01.

Johnny,

Sorry, yours has a low dome in it.

14C,

As far as I know, all of the KL1's came with NX05 optics. The beam just looks different with a high dome in it.

Thanks, Tony.
It seemed that both my KL have low domes in it. Both had the same quality of light, except that the other one (not sent for modding) has a very slightly more pronounced hotspot compared with the one sent to Tony for modding.

It seemed that the serial numbers can't really be a basis in search for HDs on the KL1. Any ideas on how to pursue or track these new releases?

Don, So what you're saying is that your statement is based on partial and imperfect knowledge, and often speculation?
I do think it's a bit rude not to warn us of this when you post.
