A very dark world.
I have a lady friend who babysits a young child. She is "afraid" to put a real knife on her keyring or in her purse for fear that one day "the kid" will get ahold of it. Can anyone recommend a knife (about 2" blade) that is reasonably "childsafe" by means of being difficult or tricky to open?

tell her like I told my wife. carry it on you that way you have it when you need it, like a kershaw chive cliped to her pocket. any knife is a danger if left unattended and if she won't carry one then she is one of thoes sheeple and can't be helped.

Just get a nice small SAK and put it in a pill bottle with a child resistant cap.

I think a Rollock available HERE

I handled two of these for a couple of weeks. It takes some getting used to to open and close. It's about the most kid resistant I can think of beyond a tight slipjoint.
I like the clear handle better than the red handle. Those are the two I tried.
Nice blade, small size. Can be keychained with small fear of opening.
Other knife knuts that have handled liked the blade. Tho many didn't like the more difficult opening compared to a thumbstud or spyderco hole.
I don't want to sound like it's difficult: it's not. Just different.

Good hunting and let us know what you end up with.

Thanks for the tip. Hopefully the local knife store will have the Benchmade or the Rollock (or both!) in stock for me to examine. This is gonna hafta be a gut level judgement call.

If they still made the Case Tri-Fold, that would be a good choice. I would say a Leatherman P4 would also be a good choice.

I like the CRKT Rollock a lot, I had a hard time opening it and I knew what it was supposed to do. Lot cheaper than a Benchmite. You might show her the new limited edition Rainbow colored Benchmite, very impressive.

Hi Stainless
TIN has a good choice in the Benchmite.
Bigcozy's description of the rainbow benchmite is spot on.
It is lovely.

I've become a Benchmadeoholic after a trade for my first BM. A 940.

If she doesn't like the knife or use it. YOU can always appropriate it.
If this is likely to happen I recommend getting the Benchmite /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ah yes, my beloved Benchmade. I carried a Axis 710 from about the time they were released. Unfortunately it was stolen, along with my specialdor, when my house was burglerized back in April. I just recently replaced it with a Microtech Mini Socom . The Microtech is a great little knife, but I miss my 710.

To stay on topic I very much recommend the rollock as well.

Well, I did get out to some local knife stores over the weekend. Did not find the rollock, only the Benchmite. The Benchmite IS a possiblilty, but looks awfully tiny in real life - especially for $70 - $80 retail. (That much cash buys a big hunk of knife from Cold steel) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mini or mid sized leatherman - I think I have a P4 around here somewhere - I'll have to open it up and pay attention to how much is involved in acccessing the sharp part.

Thanks for the link. The Christy might suit the application, but is perhaps not as "dressy" as I would like for a gift to a female.

I'll have to look around a bit more to see if I can handle a rollock before buying online. I guess I can always send it back if I don't like it for the intended application - but I would probally just wind up keeping it for myself and I'm actually pretty well stocked with knives for my personal use. Really. I DO have all the knives that I need. I really do not need to...

Stainless, The Rollock is pretty tiny also. Check out the dimensions. I didn't realize the Benchmite was fairly small
Maybe consider a Swiss Tech. I don't care for the but they would suit your needs. It is fairly difficult to open, has tools, and a blade. The one I'm handling has a yellow photon as part of the package.
The Swisstech I'm lookin at is in the shape of a key and closes around a key ring. Very secure.
Again I don't like it but it may be the ticket.
