L4 \"Throw\" Question(s)...

1. Is the emitter in the L4 an HD (I assume it is, but I just want to verify...)?

2. Is there any way to enhance the throw of the L4 with some type of external optic (i.e. something that wouldn't involve going "inside" the bezel to install a collimator)?

Don't get me wrong...I LOVE my L4!!! It's just that as white and bright as it is, it would sure be nice to find a way to tighten the beam to give it a longer throw...I think that would be awesome! I've gone so far as to pop the lens out of my Docter Aspherilux 125 and mounting it in the bezel of a blue SF filter and putting it on the L4 (...the results were quite "underwhelming"). Luckily, the lens popped back in my DA125 just as easily...

Anyway, I was just wondering if anybody else has had the same inclination and has tried anything else to get more throw out of their L4 (I KNOW I'm not the only one who's thought about this!).

If anyone else has tried to get more throw out of their L4 with any degree of success, I'd sure like to hear about it!
Thanx and Regards...

Re: L4

I don't think there is such as thing as a low dome 5W Luxeon.

Sure there will be many lenses you could try and then rig into a beamfilter that could focus a tigher beam.

I believe that people don't really expect a tight beam long throw light from such a small diameter reflector and large source. Perhaps optics are the way to go?

Re: L4

Don't expect me to research the different types of lenses that you could use!

Re: L4

Stick the 5Wer in an SRTH or KT-TH and you'll have better luck with a better throwing beam. A M$g head is the best way to go if you want something longer throwing than an L4. Otherwise, the L4 isn't designed specifically with reach in mind, as its best utility is close to medium range semi-flood work. It's as much a utility light as it isn't intended for "tactical" purposes; although it can still be used as such... Only thing I can think of that would increase the throw of the L4 is to smooth out the reflector; but that's a chore in itself...

Re: L4

I think I'll pass on smoothing out the reflector, adding a collimator, or anything else that would require ANY sort of disassembly of my L4...I like it WAY too much, and dropped too much $$ on it to risk damaging it! I was just curious; I figured that as bright as this thing is with a wide focus, imagine how cool it would be with a tighter beam that really throws! But there's other lights out there for that purpose, and I'm sure I'll be parting with more of my hard earned paycheck in the very near future to find one...

Re: L4

Well, you only have to look at one proof that the deeper the LS is set, and the wider the reflector is, the better the hotspot will be and the farther it will project because of its thinner beam: The McModule... Compare its reflector/bezel/beam size/shape against the L4 and you can determine how a particular change in the L4's reflector will improve/degrade its beam...
