I would like to add that the L5 ships with the dual o-ring M2 body rather than the C2 body (/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif for SF!!) and the clickie action is really nice. The constant on is only activated deliberately. I did metering on it and got

1m = 2000-2350 Lux
3m = 120-145 Lux

The scallops on the bezel are not very aggressive and the rim is nice and thick too.

Seems to have just as much if not more sidespill light as the L4. I got a question though, are they making L7, & L8? If so what are those differences goign to be?
 
Fed Ex just delivered my L5. Here are some first impressions.

Weight and size - my subjective experience:
I was a bit shocked by the size and weight compared to my A2. From pictures I had seen I didn't expect it to be so big and heavy. The A2 is somewhat pocketable. The L5 is not. The L5 is more large coat pocket pocketable. Surefire calls the L5 a "Combatlight."

Ergonomics:
My first impression is that the attached clip is very uncomfortable in the hand. Perhaps I would get used to it in time, but my first act was to to remove it. Also, the balance seems very front heavy due to the large bezel. However, this "out of balance" first impression begins to fade as I continue to play with it.

Light:
Very bright, very white hotspot with good side coverage. Excellent beam quality. Very impressive. It's only 11:30 AM here and I will have to wait till dark and take it for a real walk.

I am glad I bought it but note that I am a recently addicted flashaholic and bought it to see what Surefire's latest product using a 5 watt LED would do. Note again that these are just quick first impressions. I need to live with a product for some time before I would trust my opinion.

I wonder how hot will this thing get? There is a special insert in the packaging warning about leaving your L5 on when under anything that would prevent air-cooling. It says, "If the material is combustible, this could raise the possibility of fire."

The ergonomics, weight, and size are almost identical to the M2 Centurian Combatlight. I agree it's not as simple to carry as an A2, but the A2 is based on the Executive series and the L5 is an M2 body with the KL5 head. I had an M2 before, so I knew the exact size/weight it would be. I find it's pretty easy to carry, and I get funny looks until they see how amazing the photon output is.

It is impressive no matter what.
 
The current consumption would be very interesting as indication of the drive level of the LED.
 
The clip is the same

As for current consumption and putting it on a 9V body, I seem to remember a thread that discussed those. Maybe someone with an amp meter could check, but I think the L5 will run at the same current as the L4. The result should be around 667mA.
 
just a point to note though, the C2 and M2 bodies are identical, except for the etchings. you can put an extra O-ring on a C2 as well.

It will certainly *work* on 9V, but don't expect the electronics to save you from yourself. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif You'll be in direct-drive. Yeah, it'll be bright, but for how long, I can't say.
 
My McModule has about the same output as my L4 but with a tighter, longer throwing beam. Can the L5 really be significantly better?

I'm hoping that thermal problems won't accelerate dimming and shorten life when I run it on a G2.

Spoke with Steve at Surefire Customer Service, an hour and a half ago, about this very issue. He said the KL5 is designed to be used with 2 cells only, just like the KL4.

Well, heck. They ARE making the KL6 for three cells specifically. It doesn't suck all that bad...
 
Except for that the KL6 will only fit M series lights. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif Nobody makes an E2M yet that I know of. I was hoping to use the KL5 on my UBH II with E2C and 3 cells. Oh well. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon23.gif Like I said, McLux PR head to the rescue! (And for less $$$ too!)

Just have to wiat till the next lot of Black HAIII ones make it into the shoppe. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/popcorn.gif
