What 5W LS would be better for making a flashlight using a reflector?

Lambertian or Side Emitting?

Lambertian, IMHO. The side emitter still seems to have a fair amount of light come out the front or top end. If you are going to try to use an existing reflector, I think you will have similar or better results with the HD (Lambertian). If you can design a reflector specific to the LED's dispersion pattern, it may be a different story. Obviously Lumiled designed the side emitter with something in mind but hell if they bother to tell us!!!

You mean Lumileds would make a side emitter without a reflector, and not tell us what to use with it? Surely, you jest.

I can only compare colored ones, but I think if you need a short (stubby) reflector, you'd be better off with a side emitter. Otherwise, it's hard to say since it depends on what kind of beam you're after. For max. throw, I would say a HD with deep reflector is better. I also think the HD gives a smoother beam. The side emitter is a bit ringy, even without reflector.

Well, I think Kevin is now in a position to answer this as he has white LED's in both SE and HD. My only experience has been with the two in 5W and of cyan flavor. I was surprised at the amount of light that came directly out of the SE and was not directed into the reflector. WIth both a SF turbo and full size mag reflector, there was no appearant advantage to the SE in terms of beam pattern or intensity of the center beam. One thing I have discovered since is that it is pretty clear that if you do want to use a parabolic reflector, regardless of size, a HD or SE seems to be a much better bet than the batwing.

I look forward to Kevin's findings!!
