New to these forums.

Always been a fan of gadgets, torches being one of my favourites, and was recently looking at the Cree torches on dealextreme, and thinking about buying one of the P7 supposedly '900' lumen torches.

But then I got thinking that in truth, I dont need a torch of that much power, what would be more useful is a torch that can also function as a lantern.

Something along the lines of the following:

I suppose I want it to be more torch than lantern, in that it should be relatively small and easily handheld, but also have a good lantern function in being able to put out a good amount of light at near enough 360 degrees.

Anyone have any suggestions?

If you are choosing between those two, I would definitely go with the Favourlight (Silverpoint branding). :)

Well those are just two quick examples of torch lantern hybrids I could find, so not really choosing between them, unless the Favourlight turns out to be the best of its kind (having said that, I cant figure out how that thing works like a torch).

thats an interesting idea I had not heard of, but the problem I then face is how to find a diffuser cap which will fit onto the model of torch I buy or have bought.

the problem of finding a diffuser cap for a torch is probably easier than finding a torch that could be a lantern also. I know of no decent lights that are lanterns also. The ones I know of are miserably underpowered incans running off 4AAs. I have seen a few energizer lights that are useful as lanterns also you pull the reflector assembly out to allow side flooding. I know fenix sells diffusers for their lights and many have come up with diffusers for other flashlights using things such as film cannisters and such.

I just got a Cyclops Apollo as an 'impulse buy'. Only 26 lumens so not too bright in 'torch' mode but should be plenty for most tasks. Put it in lantern mode and the light is diffused and smooth. I like the compact size also but this also means that the 3xAAA batteries does not give it a ton of runtime. Plus I'm just not a fan of AAA lights. It's a cool little light in the "gadget light" realm but I doubt I'd rely on it when the situation is serious.

Saw a review of the Industrial Revolution UCO MightyLite version of the Apollo here. Plus there is a single AA version available at countycomm.
