i use my «5mw green laser pointer to scare birds and cats pointing to the ground near them...it is fun.

FreeSeeker: Let me start by saying that this can be both cruel and unnecessary at scaring away an animal. I hope it is within my power to discourage this method of animal repelant as anything less than a last and final resort.

To answer your question: Any animal who would be skittish and scared off by laser light, would be equally effected by the least powerful red keychain laser, as they would by any laser of greater power. (Unless the intent is to cause permanent vision loss, and subsequent slow and cruel death by starvation.)

All predatory animals have significantly more sensitive eyes than we do, and most of them can see red better than we do (makes spotting blood nice and easy). A mere glint of a weak red pointer should cause sufficient distraction and disorientation, as much as any higher powered laser would cause. But I would say screaming and throwing things would be far more effective at scaring the animal away.

Please don't consider the use of a high power laser, for the purpose of blinding an animal, as an appropriate method of self defense. It may be an easy or effortless method for you, but it is 100 times more cruel than shooting or wounding the animal. And don't trust that just because the animal is blind, means that it is immobilized and harmless. A blind animal still has its hearing and smell to find and kill you.

Bring an airhorn with you when you go camping. It's probably the most effective way to scare off any beasty. (Loud means Big and Powerful!)

If your being attacked by an animal and all you have to defend yourself is a laser, you need to seriously reconsider what you packed for the trip....

Never have I said: "Im going into a potentially hostile environment, I think I'll just carry my leadlight with me."

Get a gun. If the flying lead doesnt scare off/kill whatever is coming after you then the noise will confuse it terribly, which would give you enough time to squeeze off another round as you are running away.

The directions on the shampoo bottle come to mind: "Lather, rinse, repeat"

i agree.when i scare birds,NEVER shined laser in their eyes!
its only on ground or trees near them.

In most cases, I don't think that using a laser would work well anyway, aside from the fact that it's cruel. Imagine a mountain lion charging you, it's nearly impossible to hit it in both eyes (and long enough) with that little dot.

At night, powerful flashlights work well at stoping and confusing animals.
