I would like to find our from our CPF members if anyone had problem taking the leatherman XTi or any multitool for travel by plane? Does custom allow passenger to keep it in check-in luggage? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Are you kidding? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

You didn't mention where you are located or where you're traveling to. I can tell you in the U.S. there is NO CHANCE AT ALL of bringing in your carry on luggage.

I recently got stopped at security for having a Swiss Tech "Micro Tech", and it doesn't even have anything sharp- just a tiny pliers and screwdriver. You would probably get in a lot of trouble if you tried to bring anything with a blade (and the Xti has at least three).

In the U.S. you could probably put it in your checked luggage, but you'd run the risk of it growing legs. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rant.gif

On a related note- does anyone know the policy about multi-tools on cruise ships? Feel free to PM me if you have any info (I'm planning a trip with the wife and in-laws).

In the UK at least, you'd be OK with it in the HOLD luggage not your carry on luggage.
Big fines and sentences for infringements. Especially when you explain that the semi circular cutouts in the plier are "only for blasting caps officer" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I put my Wave in my checked baggage last summer and someone at the TSA helped themselves to it... Just a little warning.

I am from Canada. If I travel to the US for biking vacation, I need to bring along my tools. Does this means I have to travel by train or car after 9/11 event?

No, it just means you can't carry it on with you, in cabin. You need to put it in your checked luggage. Like Epi said, though, the TSA does do spot-checks of the luggage, and things up and disappear all the time. .

ok thanks everyone. I guess I put it in checked luggage.

I took a lot of expensive tools when I was activated during hurricane season last fall, including my A2, Benchmade and a Swamp Rat knife. I wrapped mine up so they weren't just sitting there, and they all made it down and back with no problems. .

I have taken my Wave in checked luggage no problem last year for a sailing trip. However, I am hearing more and more that things are growing legs from the time you check in to the time you pick up. You would think that for all the money we have blown on the TSA, they could find a way to keep your stuff safe.

when i went to europe i carried three knives a gerber gator, a leatherman juice xe6, and a mini champ victorinox i carried the mini champ on board and they didn't say anything but maybe it was cause i was 14 at the time the other two stayed in a pair of smartwool socks in my bag

If you are concerned, use the lanyard and a small lock to attach to the inside of your luggage. This will keep most of the honest people honest. Or if you are really concerned, use your spare multitool. I have 4, and I rarely fly with my best.

You'd be suprised at what you can smuggle past guards. Camouflage it in something else - like inside a larger flashlight or in a carved out book. As long as they dont x-ray it. I could make a gun to not look like a gun and smuggle that onboard. Over the years of a life of smuggling - I have learned that guards see what they expect to see - dont disappoint them.

Other options are that you can mail it ahead to your destination. the PO has a priorty envelope (free) that goes with anything you can get inside for $3.85. Just get one and stuff it and send it.

Speeking of seized or surrendered stuff at airports - California had a "garage sale" at their warehouse in Sacto the other year. I picked up a few knives and things. I wish they'd have that kind of sale again. There is just gobs of stuff taken at airports. I got a real nice never used "Old Geezer" (Old Timer) knife there for 5 bucks. I dont need anymore knives but they fun to collect.

I dont fly because if God had intended for me to fly He would of given me more feathers.

The good folks at TSA sometimes drop the ball as it were. I walked through the gate with my Spyderco Native and didn't hide or conceal it. I simply forgot about taking it out of my pocket prior and dropped it into the tray with everything else. The guards didn't even look: they were too busy discussing which one of them knew the most words to a rap tune.

I've had no issues packing items in my checked luggage, but I make sure to keep the valuable things, like my multitools or knives, layered in. What I mean by that is that I put the knife inside something else... like a portfolio or something, and then THAT goes inside a pocket or pouch that is zipped, buttoned or snapped... and then THAT is packed under everything and strapped in or otherwise secured. The key (in my warped mind) is to make it take SO long for someone to steal it that the fear of being caught overwhelms the perceived value of the item for the thief.

Just my $.02 oworth.

Mossberg makes a pretty stout cable/padlock device for securing guns , this creature can be used to attach valuables to some structural part of your luggage . The boys can inspect to their hearts content but it's a pain to steal .
