I have carried a leatherman of one sort for ten years now, so I am biased toward leatherman. This is even harder for me knowing Tim Leatherman's politics. That being said, I have owned gerbers (various) a swistool and a buck tool (wish I still had that) and I think leatherman makes the best quality tools. Everyone plays catch-up to leatherman, hands down.
I have had the XTi since the first week they were on sale, and have been happy everyday since. I wanted it for the 154cm steel which NO other multitool has. It is awesome. I use it everyday, and it holds an edge very well. Yes I had to regrind and sharpen, but what knife have I NOT had to sharpen?
When I need the pliers, no they don't fling open, but you can open them one handed, it just takes a little practice. (If I need the butterfly knife effect, I just use my old supertool). The new pliers are much improved.
I used the wave from its opening until I bought this Xti, and from day one the inside tools were a pain to open. They were hard to open, and of course they clumped. I didn't really care though, because the interior tools are used least of all (for me anyway) and having the comfort grip pliers and the one hand opening knife made up for it. The Xti solved this problem. Brass fittings mean everything opens easier, and the thumb cut-outs make opening each interior tool a breeze, and now they all lock which makes me very happy. And the lock works like a charm. The flat sided bits are awesome. I was a little skeptical at first, but they have worked on everything I have tried. Having a torx and allen set with me all the time has come in very handy.
The leather sheath is the best multitool sheath I have ever used. I debated about the Xti and Ti, until I saw the sheath. The sheath allows me to carry my micra in the side pocket. Scissors on a multitool are always a compromise. The Ti's scissors are better than the old wave, but still nowhere near as good as the micra. Plus I can carry duct tape in the other pocket. This supplements the duck tape I carry in my wallet, so that i can carry almost 3 feet worth.
When I first got my wave(1998), I was totally enamored, but there were some things I knew that had been compromised. I don't feel like there have been any compromises with the Xti.
I have a buddy that has a sog. It definetely has its merits, but in my opinion, the Xti is a higher quality edc tool.
JMHO.
