Hello,I am planning on purchasing an A2 Aviator and I am unsure of what LED color I should choose.I would like to be able to see ice while I am walking. What color do you think would be best for this? Thanks.

I would assume to say that water and ice reflect light differently. Water having sharper reflection of light and ice more or less diffusing the light. I would bet that almost any LED would be able to differentiate them.

I also would love to hear anyone else's results or experience on this topic.

youre really going for enhancing contrasts, so generally the best all around is amber. but theres no amber for the A2 and i wouldnt necessarily say go for the red.

so my second choice would be blue, but as this is best with lower outputs youd have to decide whether you can deal with less illumination.

Living in the desert Southwest, I've never thought about this sort of thing, but who knows - maybe I'll go North someday. Still a very interesting thread since I'm soon to receive my very first colored LED. So here are some dumb questions to add to the mix:

Does it matter whether the ice is more or less opaque? Whether there is any ambient light around? Whether there is any salt, dirt, soot, or rotten squid green stuff in it?

We need beamshots of different color LEDs on ice cubes!

Now we need a new term...how about "ice cube hunter"?

how about like, polarized light coming out of the torch, i wonder what kind of effect would that have on stuff like solid clear ice

Hello KC9KFJ,

Welcome to CPF.

I have found that the YG A2 works very well in a wide variety of conditions, including ice. I should add that my experience was in areas with minimal ambient light. The YG is not very bright, but it seems to have the right spectrum to make hazards stand out when your eyes are dark adapted.

If you are talking about ice on pavement white light works well in my experience, but I don't think it matters what LED you choose on A2, because you need more power than that to see the reflection from ice.
