I'm curious about the designations used in describing LEDs. I think I have Cree down pretty well with the P4 then Q2 then Q4, Q5 and now R2, the sequence is pretty hard to miss. but what about the Luxeon Rebels. I know of the 80 and the 100 and was very impressed by them but it seems that they've pretty much vanished. What happened? When it comes to the Seoul LEDs, I'm clueless. I've heard of the P4, but with no change I suspect that they're not using the same grading method as Cree.

Lumileds couldn't keep up with production level demands and Cree has clobbered them in sales figures. That's why you don't see them as much. Seoul's "P4" is the LED model, not a bin code. "U" bin is their most common the market right now. Keep in mind that Seoul's U-bin is very large compared to the relatively small Cree bins, and covers the same range of color and efficiency as several Cree bins (at least). Also, Cree rates by the bottom of the bin, where Seoul rates by the top of the bin.

Lumileds also did recently recall various Rebel and [new] K2s, and the recall included Rebel 80s and 100s.

The Seoul power bins are wide, (effectively the same size as Lumileds, about 20% spread per bin) but Seoul colour binning is distinct from power binning, and is extremely similar to Cree colour binning - the Seoul 'standard white' SWO bin is virtually identical to Cree's WD bin, etc

I'm going to move this to 'Beyond Flashlights - LED', where component specs, binning etc are matters for discussion.

Cree-XRE and Seoul SSC P4-U bin LEDs also share the same LED die, (cree EZ1000). Lumileds at the present moment is in the state of recalling all K2 TFFC cool white emitters and all rebels (cool white RB70 thru RB100, the top three bins of neutral and warm white, and the single or 2 top pins of flux output for the colored rebels). This recall covers those models (there is a sticky on the LED forum about it) that states that the time period is from WW4407 to WW0208. Before this recall even happened the demand for the RB80 thru RB100 cool white was so high that lumileds could not keep up with it. That is why you saw them vanish from the market.
