Hi,
My name is Rob and I usually hang out at the Otherpower board.
I was looking for info on a Safari Lite by Burgess when I came across this site.
Anyway I have been designing SMPS (switch mode power supplies) for High efficient LED conversions to standard flashlights.
If you go to this site you can see one of my lights.
This is no whimpy light and it's better than a 3D maglite in both color and intensity. The LEDs are from Lumiled and are called Luxeon Stars for those of you who don't know.
I'm designing lights for the house now with these Stars.

Welcome to CPF RobD!

I'm going to move this Mods Section.

Respectfully,

Al

I think you intended to write: instead of [image] [url="http://dsgnspec.com/LEDS.htm"]http://dsgnspec.com/LEDS.htm

Welcome RobD,

You'll find a few people here playing with Luxeon Stars too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Welcome to CPF Rob

That is a nice project (mod) you got there, btw

luxeons are great aren't they?

i think you'll find that we know quite a bit about luxeons too /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

i've modded quite a few mag 3d's to use them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Wow!!
This is great! I thought I was the only dweeb sneaking around the flashlight isle thinking what can I do with this thing.

Hi RobD,

Welcome to CPF. The only thing I would comment on is the heatsink. It appears to be "floating" above the board; if you could somehow attach it firmly to the Maglite's body you'd be using the light's entire aluminum mass as a gigantic heatsink and could then drive teh Star a bit harder for more brightness...JMHO!

Welcome again.

Hi,
The Star is on a 'pedestal' machined from T6 aluminum with heatsink compound between the Star and aluminum post.
Also when i designed the circuit I set it up for 250 ma. to the Star to keep the heat down. I did some visual tests and felt 250 ma would give me the best best brightness and least current drain.
Regards,
Rob

Umm, Luxeon is maxed at 360 mA, so at 250 mA, it is not the best brightness IMHO. It might be more toward the best performace and balance between brightness, heat and runtime.

Rob,
Welcome to the CPF Modified Lights forum, stretch out....look around and be amazed how fast the wallet gets thin! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif Soon, you will have a box full o luxeon and parts laying around and mumbling bin codes. The best thing you can do is run, run from here as fast as you can. Your wallet will thank you. This is your wife before CPF /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif This is your wife after /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rant.gif
Rob's next creation is a LS inside a CMG Infinity Ultra...

To Late!!
I've just modified a 'Dorky' and now I'm into SMT to see how much electronics I can stuff in one of these things!!
Rob

Here's my web site if anyone wants to see what else I do when I'm not sneaking around the flashlight isle or trying to go out with the daughter of the 'Dorky' flashlight company CEO.

Hi RobD,

Welcome again to CPF! Lot's of good advise about the wallet and wife already given, but you seem to have the sickness pretty bad. I don't think they'll scare you off. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

SMT can allow a lot of circuitry to fit in some small spaces.

This was one of the more insanely extreme mods, but still is my favorite big flashlight.

We'll be here waiting to see what you get stuffed into your next flashlight mod! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Welcome to the madness... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

This is lunacy! Nancy is bringing in a brown paper bag for me to breath into. http://www.candlepowerforums.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/confused.gif
confused
That there are actually other people doing this crazy stuff is to much for my feeble mind. I hope nobody lives around me. I'm going out to see if any flashlights are hitting the night sky.
I'd love to see all the flashlight designs around.
OK here's a very bad question. Where are you guy getting your LEDs from?http://www.candlepowerforums.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/eek.gif
eek

Hi Rob,

Unfortunately, Future Electronics is the only "authorized" distributor for LumiLeds products. However, Mark Hanna Surplus and some others also do carry Luxeons.

Plus, don't forget to check out Dat2Zip's sandwich shop, ElektroLumens web site, and other CPF member's web sites. Many allow you to purchase by BIN code, and sometimes offer rare BIN codes such R2H, etc.

You're going to need more than just that one paper bag.......

Welcome Rob.

To put the smilies in your post all you have to do is click on the 'Use Graemlins' link and then click on the smilie you want.

welcome rob
