Well, I have an ARC SLS and the 2 cell version of the pro series 3 bulb so I'll do what I can to answer some of your questions. First, there is a big difference in the beams. The Maglight reflector produces a great small spot of light, good for lighting up distant objects, but a bit too tight for close work. Change the focus of the Maglite to flood and you get a bigger pool of light, complete with the "Maglite dark circle of death" in the center, again not so good for close work. The ARC LS uses the Luxeon optic, which provides a good even pool of light for close work and lighting up stuff in the same room with you. Past 50' or so the light is too spread out to really illuminate details on stuff. There is no provision in the LS to change the focus of the beam.
I'm not sure what a "normal LED light" is (aren't they all normal?) but the LS beam is tighter and throughs a bit farther than the beam from the multi-5mm LED lights I've seem.
The 3 cell Pro-series bulb will work on 3 @ 1.5 volt cells of any size, but bigger cells like C or D will give much longer battery life than AA or AAA.
