Warleader, thanks for the link. Interesting article. I didn't realize that there had been actual incidents aboard aircraft.

While I wouldn't like to see more restrictions, lithium battery failures documented even on CPF can't be ignored. If I recall correctly, some exploding batteries emitted fairly noxious fumes, and I shudder to think what could happen in an enclosed airplane cabin where you can't get to fresh air.

the little air vents above the passengers, bring in outside air (well that is what they told me)
so if you were party to a lithium fire on a airliner, open up your air vent, mabey suggest others do the same. save the day and all. probably more convienient than opening an emergency exit to throw the thing out.

The problem is not that much that Lithium batteries can cause accidental fires but that they can be used to cause voluntary fires and that it will happen in the worst possible place at the worst possible moment. These are much more dangerous than shampoos or knives and a lot of other stuff that is already banned.

I hope the planes are equipped to fight effectively this type of fire and that the personal is properly trained. Throwing a glass of water on such a fire would be a pretty bad idea.

I predict the hysteria over this issue will eventually result in some sort of ban (including Laptops) over flying with Lithiums. I'm not saying it is deserved...just that as soon as it reaches a critical mass of political stupidity, it will happen....like many of the other TSA post 9/11 requirements.

I predict the hysteria over this issue will eventually result in some sort of ban (including Laptops) over flying with Lithiums. I'm not saying it is deserved...just that as soon as it reaches a critical mass of political stupidity, it will happen....like many of the other TSA post 9/11 requirements.

This was part of the first idea I had when they started banning liquids.
The rest involved a magnesium case for the laptop - but no water.
