A very dark world.
This topic comes up every now and then, but never seems to go anywhere. Does anyone else like the idea of a flashlight that looks like a light saber - or a light saber that functions like a flashlight? Does anyone have any ideas to design such a thing? Does anyone have any interest or skill to build such a thing? Should I just forget about it for now and maybe check back in six months?

The un-knurled VIP prototype bore more than a passing resemblance to a lightsaber - although on a small scale.

I remember an old friend telling me about a gig by aged acid-rockers, Hawkwind years ago, where they took powerful (for the time) flashlights and fixed some kind of thick condenser lens to the front, to produce a light sabre type of thing. The liberal application of stage smoke and consumption of "certain substances" probably contributed to the effect tho' /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/buttrock.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I wonder if you could make one using a green laser?

have a unit that looks like this:

[laser assembly]----------thin clear plastic rod------------| flat mirror

then have the laser go through some kind of mechanical spinning mirror, so it's being moved around the circumberence of the "saber blade" very quickly, and angled so that the beam bounces back-and-forth between the mirror on the end of the plastic rod, and reflectors in the saber body...

A little baroque, but it might look kick ***...

Not sure if it's what you have in mind, but I have a 30" long, 1" diameter acyrlic clear rod. I attached a Luxeon star to one end of it. It makes the entire rod glow. It also will project the light from the other end like a flashlight. Basically, it's like a large fiber optic. Looks pretty cool, especially with green or blue.
