I just hads to have one, plus 4 more as gifts for this upcoming Christmas. (The batteries should be ok till then.)
I got the black plastic versions.
I found it on www.ledmuseum.net on this web page
I turned it on with 2 "clicks" and after a few seconds, it was ready to work.
I then dialed my cellphone across the room with my 2.4 gigahertz cordless phone . /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/poke2.gif
The Litepro Quasar's red led blinked within two feet of the cordless handset, I then set it back down next to the cradle.
Took the quasar to within 3 feet of my cellphone waiting for me to leave a message on it, and it blinked again! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/clap.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/clap.gif
Now to find some bugs. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin07.gif

I'm glad the Quasar worked for you too.
I checked it's bug detecting capabilities with the only thing I had handy: a cellular telephone. And it did work. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Fascinating mix of appliances... might be real handy for a bouncer at a club that has a strict NO CELLPHONES policy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

I wonder if they could work in directionality and/or intensity in the RF detector on a future revision...

I think the cellular telephone has to be making or receiving a call for the Quasar to detect it. Let me go get my Quasar and cellular telephone and try that out...BRB...yup, the phone has to be "in use" before the Quasar will detect it. As soon as you hang up, the Quasar stops detecting it and the flashing red LED on it extinguishes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

Might detect the pulse the phone sends out to determine its transmission/reception strength, but you'd probably have to get lucky to detect a turned on but unused cellular telephone in that state.
Lets get out the Quasar and cell phone again and see what happens...BRB...nope, that didn't do anything. Not within two minutes anyway, which was the duration of the test.

Cell phones are continuously making short transmissions to the cell site to maintain contact and manage cell switching when in motion. These transmissions typically last a few milliseconds and may not light up the indicator at all due to their short duration and/or some filtering in the detector.

Update:
It also works at detecting motorola gp350 and gp300 2 way security radios when they are keyed. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
I just tried that last night. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Edit:
Oh, yeah, thanks for reviewing that gadget Craig.
I would have never bought it if you hadn't reviewed it first. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You're more than welcome.
It was sent by a fan of the website as a donation, not as a review sample. That's why I won't try to deliberately stomp on it or dash it against a steel rod. But I could not pass up the opportunity to evaluate it (sans punishments) and make a web page for it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

This is a rather interesting item. Around here (and in Singapore) there are all those little pendants that hang off a cellular phone and will flash and blink whenever it detects a signal. They seem rather similar in description to the Quasar (with the exception of the NUV LED bit, of course). I wonder if they could be used in the same capacity (as a bug finder)? Or perhaps the reception frequency is limited to that of the cellular phone and so would not really work?
