Yea sorry if this is in the wrong section or if it's been posted, but I'm new to CPF and can't seem to find an answer...Can I put a lithium AA battery in this light or will it burn out the electronics/mess it up in general?

Hello m4mike and welcome to CPF!

As endreein mentioned the AA Quark can handle up to 4.2v so you can use AA alkaline, lithium like the Energizer, NiMh rechargeable like the Duracell and Sanyo Eneloop. To get the brightest output you can also use the 14500 Li-Ion 4.2v.

Check out the search box on any CPF page in the upper right corner and search AA Quark battery's for all kinds of great information like runtime and output with various battery chemistry's. I use the AA Quark batterys search as a example you may have better search results with different keywords like Energizer Lithium's in a AA Quark or 14500 in Quark AA. etc..

I've used lithium and Nizn batteries in my AA Quarks with no problems. As mentioned they can handle 4.2 volts. I even paid $20 for a 2x123 Quark body and run my AA Quarks on one 17670 when I want the longest runtime.

i really appreciate the answers but i'm 100% ignorant to these batteries u guys mentioned...aside from like an energizer lithium AA or a CR123 lithium, wat the heck are these other batteries nd how much do they cost? i normally buy from all-battery.com nd the 14500 mentioned is $7.50 EACH!!! are these "premium" batts really worth it??

Before you order li-ion batteries, be sure to check the stickies in the battery section!

Li-ion rechargeables can be highly dangerous if you don't know how to treat them...

The 14500 Li-ion cells have some advantages and disadvantages:

Good:
-You will get more brightness in Turbo (over 200 OTF vs just over 100 OTF)
-Longer runtime in high vs a NiMH
-Easy to top off frequently which is nice for my EDC needs

Bad:
-Some added safety concerns, but if you get a protected cell and make sure to read (and obey) and handling procedures in the battery section that risk becomes very minimal
-Assuming you are using protected cells (which you should), there will be no warning before you lose light. It will be full output and then lights out, that said after a moment you can turn on the light again and leave it on a lower mode and get several minutes of light but this depends on how picky the circuit is and you are risking deep discharging the cell since the protection circuit may not work well at low drains.

The best 14500 are AW, but I've had very good luck with the Trustfire black/flame series from DX, my runtimes match those quoted for AWs in reviews and I've never had a problem with any that series of cell (I also own several of the 18650 black).

I run 14500 personally, but I also always carry a spare Lithium (as you were asking about) cell.

The OP was about Lithium primary but then it spread once all the battery compatibilities were listed.

The 14 is the diameter and 500 is the length in millimeters. The best brand is AW and it's actually around $12.

Good explanation jhc37013. However, the length is 50 mm (nominally), not 500 mm. The last "0" in "14500" just indicates that the cell is cylindrical in shape.

I'll second the whole AW brand of batteries. You may want to buy the AW batteries from www.4sevens.com because of the free and fast shipping from the USA. Ordering from AW directly is fine, and in some cases you'll save a little bit, but shipping takes a couple weeks because it's from overseas. Also, www.batteryjunction.com has good batteries... not sure if they offer AW's though.

L91's (Energizer Ultimate Lithiums) are fine in most modern flashlights, as they top our at 1.5V. Just don't buy them from a brick & mortar store as they are highly overprices. I won't buy them unless they are around $2 per cell or less. Battery Junction has good prices on these... use coupon code "CPF2006" I do believe. Also, use "CPF8" if you shop at 4sevens web-store.

Hope this helps.

Has anyone here actually used protected 145000's in a quark single AA? I thought I read here once that they were too long? I was just thinking of getting one and thought I'd ask here :)

Thanks for the codes Yalesky... I was just about to do a search for those!

145000's are much too long. 14500's however fit just fine.

14500 are slightly longer than my AAs but they still fit fine in my Quark AA.
