Lithium AA\'s

Just got my Streamlight 4AA 7led and considering lithium AA's. Are they worth it? Where can I get them for cheap?

Re: Lithium AA\'s

You can't get them cheap (or rather, even if you get them cheap, they're still expensive) and their main advantage over alkalines is they work better in very cold weather and have longer shelf life. They also weigh a bit less, but if that's important to you, you're better off with a smaller light than a 4AA.

As for prices, batterystation.com sells them for $1.90 each, which is pretty good. I've heard of Walmart selling them for a few cents less in 12-packs, but I'd rather buy from Kevin. Places like Rite-aid usually charge around $10.95 for four.

My feeling is these batteries are somewhat exotic and special purpose. They're worth it in a few situations but in general, you're better off with a CR123-powered flashlight if you want lithiums, or alkalines or rechargeables if you want AA's.

Re: Lithium AA\'s

I like them in the Arc AA because IMHO they are not prone to leaking and gas pressure development in addition to the advantages paul mentioned.

btw ... if it is a good idea to put them into a unregulated light I dunno ... might let out the magic smoke ...

Re: Lithium AA\'s

Yeah, I'd worry about the magic smoke problem too. The LED's in that flashlight are driven pretty hard. They will be driven even harder with lithiums.

On the other hand, the current is limited by a resistor in that light. The resistance in that resistor may be so much bigger than the internal resistance in the batteries, that going from alkaline to lithium may make no difference.

I'd be careful though. If it was my flashlight, I'd measure the current with alkalines and then with lithiums to be sure I wasn't frying the LED's and melting the plastic reflector.

Re: Lithium AA\'s

I wouldn't us them in a SL 4AA led!
Maybe 3 with a dummy would be ok if
you want the longevity and cold weather
benefits. Search for overheating threads
about this light.

Re: Lithium AA\'s

Thanks for the warning about overheating. My 4AA will stay in the house so I'll stick with alkalines. I have a bunch in the drawer I need to burn through anyway.
