Lithium battery ???......

Ok so i do alot of caving and night hikes, I have battery carriers for most of my batteries. But what i need to know is how lithium batteries can explode or start a fire in your pocket? Also does this happen with all lithium(AA,AAA)? Can i just throw the dead cells in a bag in my pack or will dead cells still go also. Thanks.

I guess there is a chance of it happening. But it is extremely remote. I've been a cop for 6 years and every single day of my career I've had at least four spare 123A lithiums in my patrol bag and have never had an issue.

You should probably check out some of the threads at the top of this Forum. Here and here,for starters. Battery University also offers much information pertaining to not only Li-Ion cells (and other sections), but all chemistries.
