...have not posted until now.
Hello to everyone!
When I finally registered, it was my intent to respond to a specific question, but another member replied quite eloquently so I never posted my response.
Like many I know, I have been a dedicated Maglight user; with the usual 2D for home, 3D in the cars, and 2C in jacket pocket for when the 2AA is just not enough.
I bought the original McLux in '03 and just kept it on my desk so it was not carried or used. That was my first foray into high output LED lights.
I late '04/early '05, I bought a Surefire L4 head modified with a LuxIII LED by Chop. I carried it and used it quite a bit. It is now my nightstand light.
In the spring of 2006, I bought into the McGizmo line in a big way when a neighbor needed some cash ASAP. I paid $165 for a whole A-2, PR/T head, PR head, and a whole A-3 not knowing what these were. He is a good friend and I wanted to help, but he wouldn't accept a loan so I made the purchase.
I really didn't know what I had until I read what others had paid for these lights when they were new. These pieces were absolutely in shelf-queen condition so I felt kinda bad paying so little for them.
All of them had LuxIII LEDs and I was quite pleased with them until that same neighbor showed me a light he just acquired a few months ago that contained a Cree LED. It made those that I bought from him a year earlier look pitifully inadequate output-wise.
I contracted the services of a long-time CPF member to update the A-2 and PR/T head since these were the ones that I seem to be using most frequently.
The result after the LuxIII LEDs were replaced with SSC P4s is absolutely stunning.
I carry and use the A-2 everyday now. I remember reading a post several years ago about using shrink wrap to protect the outside surfaces of their lights. I have the A-2 completely covered with the stuff and it practically prevents the light from getting scratched.
I traded the McLux for a 3-CR123 tube. I bought a Surefire clickie. I attached them to the HAIII PR/T. This light now has 3 different shades of HAIII. No big deal since I'll wrap it in shrink tube.
I am now in the market to get the PR head and A-3 LE modded to a higher output LED.
Thanks all for all those years of informative posts. I have learned more about flashlights from this board than I could have ever imagined.
