I'm looking for a flashlight With good throw & flood. I live in a fairly big lot (3 acres) with no light whatsoever on the back of the house. Its around 2 acres on the back & it gets very dark there. Sometimes people (mostly kids) decide to be enter the backyard,
Not really sure why, it only leads to the backwoods. I want a Flashlight that can light up a big section of the backyard @ once. My Fenix LD 20 does a great job, but if there is more than one person, I want to be able to light up all around them & blind them. Sorry! I don't appreciate unwanted guest in my backyard!

@ 1st I was going to get a clone from DX or Kaidomain, but after reading a lot of

info on these lights. (mostly problems with reliability) I figured if I buy a flashlight I want it to work & be dependable, especially when I need it the most. I have been thru 4 hurricanes in my life, the worst one, in PR in 89, left us with no power for 4 weeks. I know very well that in cases of emergency the last thing that you need is for your equipment to fail, especially a flashlight.

The ones that I am divided over are:

  • Dereelight CL1H V4 MC-E
  • Dereelight DBS V3 w/ 1SM-E Cree MC-E
  • Solarforce Masterpiece
  • EPSILON eD-P72
  • Fenix TK 30
  • JetBeam M1X Review (Cree MC-E)
  • Olight M21 Warrior
  • MG RX-1 Cree MC-E (from shiningbeam) ????????

Any other alternatives are welcomed!

I know that there are differences between these flashlights& how much abuse they can take ????

I appreciate any help & info you guys can provide me to make a good decision.

Thankslovecpf

I have the DBS MC-E and it does an awesome job of lighting up several acres. I don't get to use use it much in big open dark fields but when I do, it really surprises me. Some people say its not a thrower but it dominates a Mag 3-D with the Malkoff R2 drop in (240+ OTF lumens) in throw. ANd will easily illuminate at 150 yds plus

I think he's looking for a good throwing light with a wide beam. Not a throwy light with a good spill.

I'd suggest a quad die LED light/large die LED light with a smaller reflector. That should give the wall of light the OP might be looking for.

:welcome:

if the 2 acres of your back lot is relatively square then you would have 300'x300' and the longest stretch you would ever have to cover is 425' (corner to corner). i have my own LD20 that i love but i think its dismal over such a distance, at least when i compare it to something like my M20 or A9 (w/ the OPR installed). i guess i'm confused. when i shine my LD20 out 300' the hotspot grows 10-12' (judging by eye), easily bigger than one person. 300' isn't all that far, it offers no challenge to any purpose-built thrower or even a light designed to have a good balance between flood or throw. if you're satisfied w/ your LD20 (at least in terms of reach) across your backyard then i would think just about anything w/ an MC-E or P7 would work great. you might consider an Olight M30, its usually the first one i reach for when going outside. its definitely designed more w/ flood in mind but the output is so high that it overcomes distance quite well. below is a comparison of my LD20 and M30 at about 10yds. i would've liked to do it over greater distance but my camera wouldn't cooperate.

now if you want a light PURELY for the purpose of blinding teenagers then Stanley's HID or B&D's V-2 halogen might be more fun.

Id recommend the Jetbeam M1X. Very very bright and an excellent thrower. Lower mode is programmable so you can even set the first mode to really low, so you can get to the backyard without them seeing you.

If you want something more floodier id recommend the tiablo ace-g.

Yes, Jetbeam M1X should be a good choice.
Alternatively, you can get HID (regular one) and shining your back yard.

Is the Jetbeam M1X more flood or more throw. I have the Raptor and it is too narrow a beam for me. So I am looking for the same light I guess, a good mix of flood and throw.

Surprised that noone has suggested the Fenix TK40 yet. It has a quad-die MC-E, and it has an absolutely superb beam with a nearly perfect balance of throw and flood IMO. It is great for illuminating large areas at once. And it runs off AA's, which is a plus in my book, although the fact that it takes 8 of them is a deal killer for many. Note that it can run off 4 in a pinch with reduced runtime.

EDIT: I see you have the TK30 on your list, which should produce a comparable beam to the TK40.

The TK30 that the OP mentioned is similar AFAIK -- same emitter and perhaps simialr driver, but it runs off 18650s or CR123s instead.

Malkoff Devices Wildcat MD4, 600 lumens good 15 degree beam of white light, no dead spots. Very reliable, very strong. Excellent warranty.

Has a low mode as well.

But is extremely expensive! As amazing as it is, is it really worth $245?

Short Answer: Yes.

Slightly Longer Answer: Yes, people pay a lot more for some other brands that do less or are not as bright because they are supposed to be of high reliability.

I have seen people pay over $350 for lights that did less and were no more reliable than this one. It is quality through and through.

Any idea when Gene will have any more in stock? They have been sold out for a while and Jay is out too. Gman, any idea what Gene has up his sleeve to replace the P7? I noticed he took those down right after I got mine (me=LUCKY:grin2:).

As far as having the best of both worlds, HID are cool (and expensive), but my cheepie Oracle 24W kills all of my LEDs in both throw and spill, and its the lighter duty one. The 35W HIDs are monsters. LEDs are still my preferred light for size and runtime, though. My Malkoff P7 throws great with a SMO reflector (I use the OP most of the time) and the beam is adjustable. MAGs are great hosts too.
