I'm looking for my first headlamp - main purpose is for some camping trips this fall - backup use in the house during power outages. I'm interested ideally in the following:

More towards flood than throw - I'm not planning on using it for night hikes but utility work around the campsite and house.

Multi mode with a low low setting to preserve vision and runtime.

AA or CR123 batteries.

I'd like at least one LED that isn't a 5/3mm but having 5mm in the mix is fine.

And I'd like to keep it around $30ish... this one may not happen as I know the Zebras are more like $50 and would be decent candidates. But I didn't know if I'm overlooking something else.

Thanks!

That's a tough combo of requirements.

If you don't mind having red being your low/night vision light and are willing to put up with ~ 2hr runtimes per 1xAA battery, the Ray-O-Vac Sportsman Xtreme can be had for about $25 delivered. The main white LED only has one brightness level, but the pivoting diffuser switches it from a punchy spot beam to a wide ambient flood. The dual red 5mm LEDs and single blue 5mm LED are the other available lighting modes and can be diffused as well.

Not perfect, but this dog might run for you.

Good Luck!
