I'm looking for headlamps that have a battery level indicator and are capable of using lithium batteries.

I know the PT Quad has a level indicator, and I've heard it can be run on AA LiIon batteries, is that true? Ive also heard it doesn't go very low. This will be a gift for my Dad, and he likes to have a really dim light. He doesn't like using NiMH in his current headlamp because they cut-off too abruptly for him. That's why I'm looking for a level indicator. I'd like him to be able to use LiIon batteries because it's cold around here.

I'm not afraid to mod if that's what it will take to get the features I'm after.

Thanks for any help :thanks:

pros for you:
has battery indicator
uses lithium CR123 primaries (and i'm pretty sure i read somewhere that it will handle a pair of RCR123 3.7V without a problem, get confrimation on this)
runs a LONG time fully regulated (over 20 hours on low, 5 on high)
and all the other wonderful things Quickbeam had to say about it in his review..

Cons for you:
the low mode might not be low enough.
it cuts off pretty suddenly, (but so much runtime combined with indicator, you may be able to look the other way on this one)

I wonder if the modes aren't controlled by the value of a resistor on the regulator board.... maybe a delicate soldering job could modify the available output levels... (if it's all inside 1 IC, then there's no hope... maybe you can ask if anyone has this light... maybe you could get them to take some picts of the regulator board for ya.)...

I have the headlmap mdocod recommended and it's great.

It will cut off suddenly when it's too low for that level, however you can start up again on a lower level. The button is in the front so it shouldn't be a hassle to click it back on. The runtime is great. For camping trips (3-5) days, I only need to change the batteries once.

It is cheap price and the construction is pretty good.
