If I buy an LS from Arc to experiment with and hook it up to a 123A, would it work and how long would it run...

It would work...assuming you got the polarity correct. It would run for a very long time. What you would have (and I think you know this) would be a direct drive light...or circut anyway. It would be similar to running a Inretech adaptor on lithium AAs.
While the discharge curve on lithiums is pretty flat, expect brightness falloff much faster than on a regulated light such as an Arc LS.

I would guess you still get 3 hours of "bright diminishing" As for the rest... I don't know. Anyone can make a wild guess..
