Some of you may have seen these Xenon Steel lights at Target. They are cheap, but I thought they looked cool and would be a good host for a PR led drop in. I went to their website and thought I'd post the link as they have some interesting looking lights (dual bulb ) too. Anyway, I got the 2AA one. Feels nice and the clickie is loud. Now to decide on an led replacement :)

Jeesh Ever Leds are still 40 bucks!

Yup, I have a couple of the Xenon Steels and I've used SMJLED PR2 dropins with them...not really bright, but better than the stock Xenon bulbs and very long running.

You could get the new Terralux Ministar1 for around $15 from battery juction:

Probably has comparable performance to the EverLED.

I was thinking of doing a more complex mod involving a CreeXRE LED star, Cree Optic and a driver electronics. But if you want easy, the Terralux Ministar1 is probably the way to go...

What's the quality of these lights like, say, compared to Mag? I'd be interested in what the beam looks like using a drop in.

Picked up 1 of these last week, but haven't had the chance to play with yet. Sears (and some K-marts) are now offering a "Variable Power L.E.D. Upgrade". A PR-based LED that is similar to the EverLed in that it will work with a range of 1.5V batteries from 1 cell to 5 cells. On the back of the package is a chart that claims it will produce from 24 to 50 lumens depending on the number of cells being used. I mounted it in a 3D Magclone and was reasonably impressed with the beam. Fairly good hotspot with plenty of useful spill. Not as bright as a 3D MagLed but quite bright. As I said no time yet to really take it out for spin. If it proves to be a keeper at approx. $15.00 I'll get some more. Craftsman #3493044. hope this helps.

when I was a kid, I bought a set with almost the entire "K" series in it... still have a few floating around but the switches don't work any more. At the time I thought I was king of the flashlights with all those cool colors and various sizes, lol.

They're what you'd expect for a department store flashlight...decent quality relative to other comparable plastic flashlights that cost around $5 to $10. The reflector in the Xenon Steel produces a tight spot with decent spill when using an LED dropin (similar to a the output of a Mag when focused).

I can't say for sure, but I would think the Terralux Ministar1 has better performance than the Sears Craftsman. You can get the Terralux at Battery Junction:

I like Lumite flashlights, but it seems like the Targets around here where I live don't carry that many of them...
