According to an insider at Lumileds, they will start to allow customers to specify desired binning. They expect that, by the end of February, you should be able to specify the bin.

The details of available binning matrix and pricing structure is still in work, and are not ready yet.

Obviously, I will NOT bet my reputation (or my nickel for that matter) on this, but it is a very encouraging news. After all, Peter G's open letter must be heard by someone.

Thanks.

that sounds like welcome news.

i am very dissatisfied with the luxeons, overall.

i have 4 that are excellent--not sure of the bin. they are very white and bright. 2 are LS/O and 2 were stars. the 2 stars i ordered from arc--they are VERY nice.

the rest: CMG reactor, 4 LS/O, and another that shall remain nameless are a very ugly green. i very much dislike the color.

that means that 4 out of 10 were acceptable.

60% are crappy...

i dont like those odds. i think i will wait for a while to order more luxeons unless i can specify the bin.

oh, and another thing: im not thrilled with the 5w cyan. why? it has an AWFUL beam pattern. it throws the 4(?) grid patterns! the NX optics help a little...and the McFlood is "ok"...but it still looks terrible.

unacceptable, in my book. i should get some beamshots--CPFers would be horrified.

Hmmm, I can see it now -- silos full of A1Z's, priced half off with still no takers...hee hee.

Charlie:

The cheap A1Z's will be sold in EBAY "world's brightest LED flashlight" specials that reference how much brighter Luxeons are than "normal LEDs".

Probably LED Club will be one of the first.

A1Z? You mean a LS size equivalent of a Nichia which needs a forward voltage of 5 volts and is less than 10K mcd @ 15 degrees?

They must have to do some kind of price laddering - otherwise everyone would be ordering Q2H 1W's. There aren't many places that would order low color temp, high Vf, low flux parts unless it was overly driven by cost.

However,
I could see using the high Vf part when efficiency is not an issue. I could also maybe see using a lower color temp. But dimmer parts are going to be a harder sell.
