Well, much has been made of Luxeon's inconsistency.

Question that is probably helpful to many others too. Does anyone have a bunch of the different tints of the Luxeon whites that you can take side by side to give a visual illustration?

Of course, to do this you either need a film camera or MANUALLY set your color balance on your digital camera.

Thanks in advance for any help.

For example, with 'pea green' that some have complained, is it REALLY pea green? If you compared these to incandescents, would still think they are pea green or would they look quite white? Is the 'pea green' green only relative to other whites?

Thanks,
MO

Here's a shot of three different Luxeon white beams. These cover color ranges 1 - 3. 1s can get to be pretty pea green. Yes, may even look pea green next to incandescent lights. 2s usually are the whitest, with very light green to pure white in the corona. 3s tend to start getting a little pink/purple tint to them, but not as pink/purple tinted as 4s and 5s can get.

The color temp rating is a relative number, and not all 1s will be so green and not all 3s so pink. I've had Q2H Luxeons that spanned from 1 to 3 in color with the majority being in the 2 region. No absolutes here on this spec as far as I can tell.

The new HD, SE and 5W whites tend to be all one color from center to edge of corona, so color variations not nearly as bad. So far out of the 5W whites I've had 2s seem to be the purest of white in color with 3s getting a little noticeable pink/purple tint to them and 1s having a slight green tint to them. No pea green ones yet like the 1W LDs anyway.

Sorry for the poor quality photo taken with my video camera, maybe Santa will bring Lambda that digital camera this Xmas......

THANKS Lambda. Much appreciated - yes, that definitely gives me an idea of what the different numbers mean. (Anyone else with photos is welcome too.)

Q on the HD. With the non-HD, I know the beam is just a dispersed beam without the lens. But with the HD, is the beam focused at all or is it very dispersed still.

Thanks again Lambda.

Looking at the lumileds specs I see that the actual beam angle is not very different for the HD vs. LD (~45 degrees at 50% relative intensity). The big difference is that the batwings have a pronounced hump (at ~40 degrees) whereas the high domes have a more 'gaussian' distribution with more intensity at the centerline angles. This is why with the collimator optic you will see a more pronounced hot spot with the HD... or something like that

.

Cheers.

moses,

You need a collimator lens or reflector with all Luxeon emitter types to get any kind of beam.
