I want to finish an old Mag mod that I never completed. Plans originally were to run a U-Bin LuxIII with a DB1200 on a 4x123 battery holder (probably only going to use 3x123 though) in a shortened MagD. Now that Luxeons are old news I was thinking to use a SSC USXOH.

I read that SSCs don't like to be driven over 1A and that they get the "angry blue" output if so. Is this true? How much current can I run the SSC at? Runtime is not a concern. Battery pack is 3x123 or 4x123 anyway. Light is mainly to show off.

Should I use the U-bin LuxIII at 1.2A or the SSC at 1A? Or should I just ditch the hotlips entirely and go for a multi cree setup? TIA.

If you heatsink the LED well, you should have no trouble driving the LED at 1.2 amp. The tint shifting is more of a sign of overheating. The Seoul would be brighter then the Luxeon. The Seoul is around 200 lumen at 1000 mA.

If you really just want to show off, I'd suggest a Cree XR-E Q5 with an aspherical lens. Something similar to this. Or a multi LED mod.

Wow that mod is absolutely stunning! :drool:Guess I'll have to put that aspherical lens on my mod list. I have another Mag in mind that I would like to do a multi Cree mod to.

This one I want to just keep simple. Will a Hotlips-D be adequate heatsinking for the SSC at 1.2A? Can I go higher than 1.2A & will it worth it?

I actually have two of these shortened Mags that will use the 4x123 battery holder. The other one is a LuxV X4T driven by a Magic Resistor driver. Is there anything I can do to upgrade that one?

Thanks

I would go no higher then 1.2, and just in case you don't know, make sure you isolate the bottom of the p4 LED from the heat sink with some artic aluminum adhesive.(the white stuff)

As far as the Lux V LED, wait for the p7 Seoul LED, and then mod it.

I recently changed a Mag 2D with a Hotlips D and DB1000 from a Lux3 (not very impressive) to an SSC (very good). It barely makes the head warmish after an hour or so, running off 6 AA NiMH. My estimate is 150 lumens or so, not super impressive/show off. I did stick a Khatod 20mm smooth reflector in it for a smaller, smoother beam.

Undoubtably a Cree or multi-Cree would be more impressive.
