Hi Folks,
I'm not finding any MXS threads
I just got my second generation Maelstrom MXS. Charging it now.
Can't wait to get You some comparative beam shots.
Some extras were included in this second run, two extra
switch buttons and a switch tool ! đź‘Ť
Pictures and review are in the works.

Excellent! I will also contribute my thoughts here when I get mine and give it a run through. I also ordered a Quark MKIII with the 16650 so looking forward to that, too. Too bad they didn't have any of the slate blue ones left

I've enjoyed mine the few days I've had it. Haven't really done more than white wall hunt - it's sitting on "standby" on my nightstand. The tint is nice - there's a noticeable tint shift when white wall hunting that I can't see in regular use. It is bright - I don't know if I'd consider it truly High CRI, but YMMV. Regardless, it's a solid, nice looking, bright brick of a light that I'm happy I own. And the 'standby' function is a good idea well implemented.

I just got mine. It's a beautiful creation. High CRI is sooooooo nice. Like run4jc said, there's a tint shift (spot in the middle) that's kinda annoying on the white wall, but doesn't seem to be noticeable in real-world use. Yes, it's bright. I haven't taken it outside yet, but it's destined to be my grab-n-go light for walking around the 'block' with my wife. My old Maelstrom (circa 2011-ish) is now on garage duty.

My flashlight has the Nichia 144a LED from the 2nd run.

Overall, I really like this light! It does what I was hoping, and that's for it to be a great light for walking on trails thought the woods / fields at night. I don't have too many lights to compare it to, but I was hoping to compliment the Hound Dog 18650 with reflector (which has awful color rendering). The MXS is great, but it still can't throw as far as the HD18650. It's close and basically good enough for what I want, but technically, the Hound dog throws farther. The MXS beam angle is wider and to me, has better spill. In an open field you can definitely see a lot more of the foreground, even way out in the field, even though you can't see those last 20 yards that you can with the Hound dog. On the trail, the wider beam angle is nice to see that extra bit to your left and right better. Sorry, no beam shots, but hopefully this helps someone imagine it good enough to make a purchase decision if needed. Color rending, fantastic. So happy with the Nichia but expected nothing less.

Here's a few other random notes I took which stood out to me.

The switch being on the side: I like it! I'll have to remember to lock it out when packing it but for using the light, it was great not to have to change grips to change modes. Maybe I normally wouldn't change modes so often but the first few uses I was playing around a lot and didn't have to change the grip once.

Electronic switch function: 2 things. 1: Initial turn on has a split second lag. It's not bad, it's just not mechanical where as soon as it clicks, it's on. Very small lag, but I notice it every time. 2) The other thing that surprised me is how the ramp up, ramp down logic works. Technically the description online is correct, I just didn't interpret it the way I should have. When you press and hold the switch, it will ramp up through the 4 modes (~5, 50, 350, 1000 lumens). If you are on high and press and hold again, it ramps down. If you are at any level, besides high, it will ramp up. Initially, I thought if you were ramping down and stopped in the middle lumen output and then press and held again, maybe it would continue ramping down. No, always ramps up, unless you're in high output.

Burst mode: Finally, a burst mode I can see working! On the Quark (QK16L) and Alpha (MCE @ 737 Lumens max), I've used burst frequently but couldn't really tell it gave me a 40% output boost for 30 seconds. The MXS goes from 1000 to 1700 lumens and it's definitely noticeable so it's been a lot of fun using that function.

LED color: I compared the MXS with Nichia 144a, 4000K color temp to the Quark with the Nichia 319A at 90CRI also 4000K color temp, and they are definitely different. I'll let the pros describe the difference better than me but the 319A is greener than the 144A. Maybe 319A is neutral and 144A is rosy, I'm not so sure but 144A was more pleasing to me than the 319A, though I enjoy both. I'm not that picky as long as they aren't very green / yellow (like the Cree XP-L in my Hound dog) and only notice when they are side by side on a white wall. Outside where I actually use them, they are both perfect for my needs. Just trying to give some feedback for those looking for information.

Finally, here's some pictures of the MXS next to the Hound Dog 18650 and the MD2. Hopefully that's a decent reference. Then, a comparison to the Quark QK16L for both size and color reference. Definitely very different anodized blues. I took some pics of the LED and reflector but they aren't that great. Including them mostly for fun.

I have had the new MXS with Nichia for about a week now so I have had some time to get used to it. The build quality seems exceptional, and the color is very nice in my opinion. It feels good in the hand and has a nice heft but not too heavy feel. The charging design is cool and seems well thought out, it is unlike any other light I have in that regard. All in all, great job FourSevens for designing a very cool, unique, and useful light.

The mode levels seem well spaced. There is mode memory, which I am not personally a fan of but I know that is a preference and some people really like memory. However, one little quirk about the memory is that if the light has a lower mode memorized it can still inadvertently memorize the high mode. This happens when you use the double click function to get to turbo or burst mode. Even if you went there from when the light is off, it will memorize the high mode if the light is on for 30 seconds or more when it steps down to high from turbo. Just beware that so you don't blast your night adapted eyes with 1000 lumens when you are expecting 5! It seems it resets it to low when you put it back in the charger, as the light automatically comes on in the lowest mode when you take it out, which is by design and kind of cool.

Now, for the big question for you tint-snobs out there like myself. Does the light produce nice 4000K tint with great color rendering? Yes! The spill and corona are absolutely wonderful and I could not imagine any better. However, there is one big caveat to this which is driving me a little crazy since I am a tint snob. The hotspot has a very obvious tint shift in it that takes up the majority of the hotspot. It appears darker than the outside portion of the hotspot and leans toward yellow instead of the vanilla white the the rest of the beam has. I noticed it as soon as I fired it up after the first charging and it really bothered me. I contacted FourSevens customer service about it and received timely replies, so props to them for that. I sent pictures and they looked into it on their end. They got back to me that they believe the centering ring is causing this tint shift problem and are working to get a solution for it from the manufacturer. I am optimistic about this and glad they looked into it. My tint/beam quality obsession is one of the biggest reasons I bought this light so here is to hoping that the new ring will resolve that tint shift.

Also, for anyone looking for holster ideas, I have an easy solution for you. A Mark IV pepper spray duty holster fits the Maelstrom MXS like a glove. In case anyone here does not know, the Mark IV denotes the size of the can so this is very important as there are Mark II, III, etc. sizes for these pepper spray cans. The one I have is a Bianchi brand but others should work, too, as it is a standard size.

One other thing, I wish this had some anti-roll flats or something built into it. Do not lay it on a table or anything as it will roll very quickly if something is even slightly out of level. The round design feels and looks nice but you have to either set it on its tail or head. Fortunately, it seems to have pretty good balance/center of gravity so that should not be a problem for most people.

Hey gang, long time no see! :) First, thanks for your continued support! Second, just wanted to clarify.

Yellow in the MXS hotspot: we've confirmed that the factory installed the wrong centering ring...the one for the previous XHP50.2 and not the current 144A. They are sending us new rings that are user replaceable. If you are bothered by the hot spot, we'll ship you an new centering ring. I haven't figured out exactly how to handle the requests yet, but we'll come up with something :) We'll email anyone who has already purchased when we get things sorted. Sales are currently on hold until we can rework our remaining stock. We sold out over half the current batch in the pre-order.

However, one little quirk about the memory is that if the light has a lower mode memorized it can still inadvertently memorize the high mode.
@Mr. Tone This was disclosed on the first pre-order, but the pre-production batch had a UI bug that prevented direct access to Burst mode from the "off" state. This has been corrected on the current batch of lights :)

Cheers,
Jason

Great to hear we can resolve that tint shift in the center. It bothers me just knowing it's there but using it outdoors I haven't noticed. Either way, I'd prefer it's corrected so I'm anxious to get the new centering ring. Great customer service as usual. Thanks.

Tell me about the 26650 and how it compares to the 21700.
I am not sure what comparisons you are asking for since there is no 21700 version of this light. As far as the batteries go, 26650 lights are similar in diameter to popular C cell lights out there, such as Maglite, Streamlight, etc. 26650 doesn't seem to get as much love and development as 18650 and 21700. Most 21700 lights are the same or slightly larger diameter to popular 1" diameter 18650 lights. Many good 21700 batteries have similar capacity to good 26650 batteries on the market. 26650 still has higher development potential for capacity and amp draw based on size alone vs. 21700.

Thanks for the reply. The reason I asked is b/c I don't know much about the 26650 or it's popularity.

Several years ago, I purchased an awesome Texas Lumens light and I opted to go with the 20700 battery, which apparently was the wrong choice as it seems that the 21700 is much more popular.

Since I would like to minimize the different battery types I have to maintain, I would like to stick with cells that will be around for a while and not become obsolete.

My next light will probably use a 21700 cell, and I was simply curious about the 26650.

Thanks -

Gotcha, this light with the included battery will probably last many years before needing replacement. In addition, it has a 5200ma capacity and loads of runtime even on high. Lower modes offer incredible runtimes. Due to that, it is unlikely that anyone will really need additional batteries. The included charging system is so convenient that it is also unlikely people will not keep it topped off since it's designed to stay there on standby when not in use. :)

I second Mr. Tone's sentiment; my new MXS contains the only 26650 I own, and I have no plans to acquire others. Normally I'm careful to not take on a random battery size, but not this time. The MXS is just there when I need it, and has so much run time I really don't have to think any more about it.

Like HRace said, it has a beautiful beam that is not particularly throwy. It throws plenty far for me, and I prefer this kind of beam. The side switch does have a lag, but it hasn't bothered me because it's less laggy than me switching my hand position to press a tail switch. Having high beam always a double-click away is superb, and until there's a mind-reading UI, I'll accept that it takes a second to get the medium modes.

In case it isn't obvious, I'm reeeeally happy with this light!

I don't think that is what Mr Tone is referring to. I think he's saying that if you have Low/Medium memorized and go to Burst, when Burst switches to High after 30 seconds, High becomes memorized.

Still loving my MXS, and today noticed 2 funny things:
1. turbo sometimes steps down immediately (like 1/2 second or something) instead of staying active for 30 seconds.
2. sometimes I can get a double-click to turn the light off instead of activating turbo.

#1 happened out of the blue just after turning it on, which made me try to re-create the issue, which led me to observe #2 as I was clicking around.

Seems like I can make it act funny when activating turbo (with double-click), then long-press to step down out of turbo, then double-click again. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't, and I think it always behaves as expected if I wait 5 seconds between mode changes.

So.....can anyone else with one of these fine torches monkey around with it and let me know if you observe any erratic behavior?

Archangel, you are correctly interpreting what I was saying. It is not a huge deal since the lowest level can be reached from off by holding the switch in. But...........if you just click it on from off remembering it should be memorized on low you might get 1000ish lumens instead!

WJA, I haven't noticed any weird behavior yet but I will chime in if I do.

I'll chime in about the battery.
The MXS's are now shipped with a Foursevens 26650 5500 Mah cell.

I'm going to try and get the correct spacer ring for the 144A

I am happy to say that I received my replacement centering ring today. I got it installed and it resolved the dark spot in the hotspot. Thank you, FourSevens, for taking care of this for me as it was my only complaint. This is a fantastic light and the tint and CRI are truly great. Now the beam quality is great, too. The light seems to be built like a tank and the whole design is unique and cool. I am thinking about picking up a second one in the near future. Great customer service!
