Mag 3D mods

I was just going through the archives but couldn't find anything interesting about 3d mag modifications.

I was wondering if anyone can give me some information about the mods, and possibly where I would be able to find these parts.

Hi greg, Welcome to CPF!

I'm not much of a modder myself, but probably the simplest mod (if you can even call it that) for the Mag would probably be something like the Everled drop in. It replaces the stock bulb with a Luxeon Star LED drop in module instead. You'll get many hours of bright runtime on that, plus it never burns out. Best thing is that you can use the same Everled for any of your flashlights that takes a PR bulb, from 1 cell to 6 cells. You can find more details at http://www.leddynamics.com/EverLED/ . You know, I tried this and a helluva time with the "C"'s.
Couldn't get them in there at all.

Here is another easy modification:
Use Stinger bulb on PR base with 3xD NiMH batteries.
Much brighter than original bulb with long run time.

I've done the 4C mod with 3 different 3D M@gs and it was only difficult to fit them in one of the lights: it was the camo finished version. It responded well to brute force. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Another 3D mod is to use three 3toDs and a KPR118.

You can get 3toDs from ElektroLumens

Radio Shack has the KPR118

I think that last mod is for a 2D, not a 3D! Running a KPR118 on 9 batteries will pop it instantly!

They were used AA Alkalines in the original high resistance 3toDs. Shear luck but it works well. Maybe the high resistance keeps the current way down?

KPR118: (7.2v 700mA) Mag 3D 9 slightly used AAs @ 1.4v 3 unmodified E.L. 3toD canisters for 12.6v est. resistance 3X 1.25 Ohm. Beam =>2X as bright and hot spot is 2X as large as the original configuration.

Icebreak is correct. I used fresh AA alkaline cells without problems.

For a 2D with two 3toDs a 4 cell bulb works, but bulb life can be short depending on bulb type.

I'm glad someone else tried this and had successful results. Cheap and easy. Nice upgrade. Not a SuperBulb but it is noticeably brighter and bigger than a KPR112 @ 3X123.

Electrolumens don't have anymore the old 3toD and only sell the new ones 3 to D that have 0 resistence.
Don't this new 3 to D will change the picture?

I wonder about the "fit" comment above?

I have two or three 3D M*gs with 4C, and a couple other off brand 3C done the same way.

I use 1" PVC pipe as a C battery tube, and a bit of tape to stop the rattle (also try to cut them so there is no play when the tailcap is tight).

With an Acrylite lense or some Writeright PDA film on a stock lense I get really nice pretty bright light!

I don't EVEN have the knowhow to LED mod one aside from an Everled, and there are plenty of lights that have better beams when using EL.

Hi Hoghead, I don't know nothing about electricity compared with you guys, but I am assuming that if the new model of Electrolumens 3 to D, have 0 resistance, them we are dealing with pure unaltered 13 1/2 volts?
IF the KPR-118 were to take this voltage without blowing up,
them this KPR-118 will be THE bulb for using in my Mag-Lite 3 "C" that is altered to use 4- 123 batteries.
I could not find before a bulb for this, other than the several versions of the potted ones by Carey that nobody want to part with.
So, I am going to try the KPR-118 in my 4-123 batteries FIRST, if that work then is not need to expend the money in buying 3 to D's,
Correct me if I am wrong, as I am new here and I have very little experience with this mods.

The KPR118 will flash if you use 4x123.

You might want to put an add in B/S/T to buy Rev.1 3toDs.

I'm not sure which bulbs to use with the new 3toDs.

You will get a lot more light with better bulbs.

I just put 4 C's into my 3D Mag, and am quite happy with the results. The fit and feel are great, it's noticably lighter and there is no rattle sound at all. Any ideas on how this mod changes the output in cp or lumens???

I have no info on actual Lumens or CP.

But my well used MK1A eyeballs see it as noticeably brighter.

Side note: I have a light made of two early 80's Rayovac aluminum 3Ds with 7C in it. I had 7 cells at about 1.54V driving what turned out to be a 5 cell Whitestar Krypton.

I put 7 new Walmart brand Everactive C cells in it...

For a brief shining moment it was amazingly bright! Then poof!

With a 6 cell krypton, it is bright and safer!
