Mag85 needs new batteries, more Titanium 1800's or something else?

Been using some High Discharge Titanium 1800 Power Max in my Mag85 for a couple of years, and they are getting a bit weak.....runtime is pretty short nowdays.....time for some new batteries.

Question: Are those batteries still the brightest, or is there something else as bright that will have a longer runtime? I see people talking about the Eneloops, I'm assuming they have a longer runtime...but do they have the brightness of the High Discharge Power Max 1800's?

Any advice is highly appreciated......:):):):):)

not the battery expert. but I was told that those batteries are very good for the Mag ROP. So I'm guessing that they are still top-of-the-line. but you should probably wait for another response to be sure...

I'm using 12 Elite 1700's pushing a Osram 64633 and have had no problems and good runtime. These should be an excellent battery for a mag85.

By 'those batteries', do you mean the 1800's or the Eneloops?

The Mag85 is not a high draw application like the 100w bulbs. Eneloops hold their voltage up to 5 amps or so, therefore they work fine in an 85. And they have a low self discharge rate, so if you haven't charged your light in a couple of weeks it will still work ;).

There hasn't been a post in this thread for a while but I'm going to post my findings. I have run Titanium 1800s and Titanium 2700s in my mag85 and found they both supply the same amps to the 1185 bulb. I get arround 3.30 amps when first turned on settling to arround 3.15-3.20 amps after running a bit. Can't see any differance in brightness but the 2700s have noticable longer run time. So Eneloops would be a good battery if the light is not used much and 2700s if you need long run times. I have found the high cap batterys need a few cycles to come up to their rated capacity and can get quite warm during charging.

Hi JRS7,

If you decide on the LSD type cells, duracell precharged AAs are what I use because if you shop around (ebay etc) you can pick them up for a lot cheaper. I have even run these beyond what is recommended in a m*g 623 and 13 of them performed better in MHO than 4 18650s. Sure the IMR cells performed better at first but the duraloops lasted several minutes longer. In fact even under that load they performed closer to rated capacity than I would have thought. 11 min. constant run time. Of course the amperage/voltage dropped toward the end but still a good option in my mind.

The last time I used Titanium 1800's which was over a year ago...they had a high failure rate, high leakage rate, and did not last long stored. Count your blessings if you got more than a year's worth of use out of yours. They may be better now, but they lost me.

I stopped using them, opting for the Elite 1700 AA from CheapBatteryPacks.com for high current (>7-8 Amps continuous) applications.

Below 7A (the 1185's only use 3.5A) I would exclusively use Eneloopies. They are robust, high quality manufacturing control, and hold their charge when sitting idle.

The Titanium 1800s still have problems. I recently bought 16, put them in the charger and had 2 leak.
I believe I'll be ordering Elite 1700s next time.
I agree. High cap batterys don't do you any good if the flashlight sits a few weeks after charging.

I got a pile of eneloops I'm going to put in a mag85 I am working on now. I gotta get on the ball and order my bulbs now! All who are interested in building a good light, definitely listen to LuxLuthor on the battery suggestions, the eneloops are great!
