It's been around 90 degrees around here, and about 10 minutes ago I hear a POP. My 2D Mag LED, sitting in it's mounting bracket, has lost it's rubber button cover, which shot three feet and bounced off the opposite wall.

I take the light outside, which still works, and remove the tail cap. The batteries (Rayovacs) slide out but the bottom battery is leaking and grey goo covers the inside of the tail cap. The spare bulb and foam cushion is destroyed, and some of the finish on the inside of the tail cap eaten away, but otherwise it's fine. I guess with the heat, the pressure built up and the button cover blew off.

I change out my alkalines every year, but I guess I forgot this light, but lucked out (this time).

A good lesson for the rest of us. I've got a couple lights loaded with alkalines that I really need to check. Think I'll go do that now.

I have a 3D Led Maglite with Rayovacs . I have had the same 1st set of batteries in mine for about 2 years, in 100+ weather and in -40 and the batteries look perfect. I just just thinking of something like this happening the other day and checked each cell. My dad had a old mag 3d that the top battery blew and got stuck. Had the toss the body away. Indiana weather is fun.

said it before... and it bears repeating, Alkalines should never be used in any light you intend to keep. Just last week I had a brand new duracell leak all over my PC keyboard!!

IIRC duracell and eveready have a $$$ back guarantee. They will refund you the $$ amount for anything their batteries destroy. Its the financial equivalent of admitting their product is destructive and failure prone.

Avoid at all costs

Ray O Vac also will refund for loss.

I don't run anything with D cells, except two Fulton angleheads. All my Mags are run on C cells, with a PVC pipe as a sleeve. Since I've done this I haven't had any problems, but I check my akalines about once a week.

I've heard of alkalines leaking before. I've experienced it many times. I've never heard of one explode like your did though. I do have a few rechargables now. They are the only batts. to be in my digital camera now. All my lights are budget priced.

BTW, it's no surprise to hear that the offending batteries in this case are Rayovacs. I've got several unopened packages of those with at least one battery leaking.

C cells are much less prone to leakage than D cells, due to their construction. They have a better crimp due to their smaller diameter, which in turn means their vent pressure is higher than D cells.

You give up runtime, of course, but you gain reliability.

Didn't know about the construction of the C cell. I did the 4 C in a 3 D Mag mod and liked it, then converted all my Mags to a similiar set up.

I salvaged my dad's last D cell patrol light, his last before a MagCharger. It's a 3 D that had some Eveready's leak. It took forever to beat out the batts, but I got it done. It's sitting in my truck now, with 3 sleeved 18650s.

The discussion concerns the failure of the batteries that were in this light, so I'm moving the thread to the Batteries forum.
