Maglite "side handle system"

The tonfa-style side handles were available long before police departments began to discourage metal flashlights following incidents like the Malice Green one involving a Maglite.

The Mags (and before it the Kel-lites) were clearly designed to be usable as emergency defensive weapons, albeit somewhat awkward ones. They are ideal for open carry because they are ostensibly illumination devices, so appear less threatening/menacing than a baton, and reduce public complaints of unnecessarily "brandishing" a weapon.
A side handle attachment eliminates this advantage while retaining the unwieldy nature of the Mag.
