Well, for fun...

Second go around,

Still grinding down to the focal point, when I get there, I'll post some shots.

So that's why you didn't talk much of the alien light beam optic, you were too busy getting ready to build your own design! Turbo optic! nice! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/popcorn.gif

Wonder if large enough optics are possible to make a 5w/lux3 focus into the size of a laser and make things burn! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

nice beam so far. I like the gradual side spill. Would be interesting to say what it compares to at each step. Like this is now as tight/bright as 30mm optics, etc. Keep up the work!

That is about as tight as my WA1318 in a mag refector (apples to grimphalons comparison, I know).

What are the dimensions?
How does it compare to the alien light beam 2"?

Did you manage to get the second one more uniform than the first? It looks rather very good from the front shot.

Talk about bleeding edge! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

it is acrylic i believe.

i think it was molded using some sort of wax...

banned? huh. That sucks, Jarhead had a lot cool info on different things. I keep seeing familair members being banned. Don't know why but it sucks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

It is odd to see such a prolific and educational poster banned...

I think the management of this place errs on the side of being too heavy-handed, too often. I s'pose it is their call (and not mine) to make, but a bit more laissez-faire around here certainly wouldn't hurt anything.

banning decisions are not taken lightly, and there is always more behind the scenes than you know.

that being said, it's not up for discussion. it is between the banee and davidw. (posting guidelines)

He made a parabola with a computer program and I believe he ground a metal flat drill bit to that shape. Then he drilled out the mold from wax while it was cooling. The acrylic was poured into the wax mold.

Hope he comes back soon.

Would there be any refraction between the dome and the acrylic if the emitter was put inside the mold before the acrylic was poured?
If not the apparent die size would become smaller right? And would it also remove two interfaces, or just one?

If a glass lens were to be bonded to the front of the optic while setting, that would remove another interface maybe?

With the TIR as well this could become quite efficient I think. Is there any shrinkage as the acrylic sets?
