Malkoff M61 or Moddoo Triple XPG?

I'm looking to spice up my standard 6P. I'm contemplating getting one of the aforementioned drop-ins. I realize the Moddoo is more than twice the price of the Malkoff, but the cost is not the only factor.

Convince me one way or the other which one to get. I look forward to your input!

I've considered the Moddoo, but the extremely short run time has held me off. While bright, I'm not sure it would be as useful. Just my opinion. I suppose if you had a need for a very bright light without the need for much run time the Moddoo would be more appealing.

Like you, the short runtime (I think estimated at 20 minutes) is also something that makes me think more than twice about this drop-in.

You can always run the triple off of a single LiIon batt for reduced output but longer runtime. I think the runtime off of a single cell 2600mAh 18650 was like 75min? And you still get about 700-800lm. But having said that, running an M61 off of the same cell gives you over 2hrs runtime but at less lumens (280?).

If 75 min at a reduced output is sufficient for your purposes, then I think the determining factor would be the performance. The m61 would give you much farther throw than the triple xpg, but the triple xpg would light up a huge area at short and medium range.

Also keep in mind that the tri-XPG cannot run primaries. To me this is a con as it decreases versatility.

I guess which one you should choose depends on your use case and how you weigh practicality vs. 'wow factor'. The M61 is floody enough that I don't think it ends up throwing any better than the tri XP-G, although I haven't actually tested them side by side.

I've got both so if there's anything specific you want to know just post it:tinfoil:

go w/ either an M61 or Thrunite's 1A (or 1.5) XP-G lamp. all three are great. i like my Thrunite 1.5A the best as a P60. i did swap another reflector on it for better throw.

save the the Moddoo for a bigger host. i have mine in a C3 w/ A19 extender and get nearly 90 minutes of runtime on two 2600 AW 18650's. Oveready claims 75 minutes on two protected 18500's. the tri XP-G becomes down right practical in a setup like this...but just two 16340 IMR's for 20min...that seems kinda silly.

I agree, the Moddoo really comes into its own in the somewhat longer 3-cell Surefires like the C3.

I've got both a Moddoo triple and a new Malkoff (the M31 actually) and the beams are so different, so that is a consideration as well.

I have both the M61 and the Moddoo triple.
Using primary CR123 batteries in your 2-cell format 6P, I would recommend the M61. It's a great drop in with most likely the best beam profile Malkoff has ever offered. Excellent balance between flood and throw.

For the Moddoo triple you will need to use rechargeable batteries. If you are willing to invest in rechargeables (batteries and charger), you could add an A19 extender to your 6P and run two 17500's or add two A19 extenders and run two 16760's. A step further is obtaining a dedicated 2x18650 or 2x18500 body with the 18mm rechargeable batteries to fit. You will absolutely LOVE the triple's output.
