Max Power Maglight?

Hi,

I have an old 3D Maglight I love the form factor. Unfortunately, technology has moved on quite considerably since the 1980's and my slightly less old (1990's) SF 9P p*sses all over it in terms of performance.

With today's advanced technology, it should be possible to build a monster almost capable of projecting a spot on the moon.

OK, so what's the maximum light output that could/should be built into this shell. Alternatively, is there a standard mod or existing flashlight that would do?

However, if you are looking for something that already exists or will be built, then take a look at "The Mule". There are many different mods for this size depending what kind of run time you want, how much brightness and how much you want to spend for it.

If you can get some Welch-Allyn 01185 or 01318 lamps, you can use Elektrolumens' 3-to-D adapters and run them off of 9 NiMH AA batteries. The 01185 is brighter than the 01318, but I think I like the 01318 better since it can produce a somewhat tighter spot and cleaner beam (since it has a smaller filament). Oh, and with either of these lamps, you need to put in a metal reflector (such as Carley's 1940 or Otokoyama's Perfect Mag Reflector (PMR)). So basically, putting together one of these monster mags (do a search on some of Ginseng's posts) involves finding a bunch of different, non-off-the-shelf parts. It is satisfying to see the final product, though. Looks like an innocuous Mag until you click the switch.

An off-the-shelf item of similar (though not quite as bright) capabilities is the Tigerlight.

You could also look at a Mag Charger with upgraded bulb (WA01160) from Flashlightlens.com.
