=== Maxpedition Fatboy ===

First Impressions:
Just as I thought when I first got my Maxpedition Proteus pack, the Fatboy is TOP notch quality all around.
Every aspect of the Fatboy is reinforced, and well thought out. They did a good job of keeping the bag small, yet able to hold alot of things, in an organized fashion.

Storage Space:
Its hard to discribe how much room the Fatboy has for storage, hopefully the photos will help convey that better. It has a good bit more room than the Proteus pack, especially in the main compartment. Which has a drawstring at the top.
I didnt think I would like this at first, but it is really nice. It is designed like high end back packs, the top of the main compartment has a sleeve that extends out the top at least another 2 inches. The draw string pulls this sleeve closed tight.
If you want, you can leave the sleeve open all the way, and fold it down inside the main compartment alittle.
There is a flap that goes over the main compartment and smaller from compartment anyway, so you dont have to closeup the main compartments sleeve if you dont want to, unless you have small things in there.

The way the Fatboys compartments are setup, makes it really easy to organize your things. The main compartment has a mesh pouch on each inner wall. When I first head it was meash, I wasnt happy. Other packs I have had, the mesh was very thin, and would catch on things. The Fatboys mesh is a nice tough, thicker, well made mesh.

One thing I noticed that noone mentioned,,,
The "knife" pouch on the side, under the phone pouch, has a velcro strap. The strap also attaches to the pack via velcro, and can be adjusted, by completely removing it from the pack, and placing it where you need it on the pouch.
IE. if you need it to be longer, or shorter.
Its the little things like that, that make Maxpedition products so nice. They put alot of thought into how you will actually use the product.

Materials:
For the most part, the Fatboy consists of the same strong fabric as the Proteus.
The back of the Fatboy has another mesh type material, that is covering a type of foam. This makes the pack very comfortable to wear, and I think the mesh will allow it to breath alittle, making the pack not stick to you when you begin to sweat alot. All the stress points are well sown and renforced. The shoulder strap is about 1.75 to 2" wide, and has a nice padded section, that can be taken completely off, or moved where it is comfortable.

The Fatboy feels great to wear, it distributes the weight very well, and seems to hold more than enough for an EDC setup. I couldnt be happier with it. If you are looking for a very well made, well thoughtout shoulder bag, this IS IT!

PLEASE feel free to ask any questions you might have, or request certain photos.
I know from experience, that it can be hard to shop on the net, due to lack of descriptions and photos.

I have a Fatboy that serves as my "Dad bag"--I carry it when I'm out with the kids. It holds a pretty substantial first aid kit, snacks, tools, and of course a bunch of flashlights and batteries. As jtice says, it's a nice bag.

One problem I noticed was that it has a tendency to gradually migrate around your body clockwise if I walk quickly or run. I solved this with a small caribiner that I clip from one of the attachment points to a belt loop.

My one and only complaint with the Fatboy is the cellphone pouch on the strap. I use mine for hiking, and my arm is constantly rubbing up against it. I wish it was removeable so I could move it to the other end of the strap where it wouldn't be in the way, since my phone is too big to fit in there anyway.

does it only sit against your butt like in the pics, or can you wear it so it sits on your side, like when walking?.

If you imagine standing on a clock and facing 12 o'clock, it can ride from about 2 to 7 if worn over your left shoulder and from about 5 to 10 if worn over your right. As mentioned previously, it has a tendency to migrate towards the front as it jostles around.

I use it every day to carry my EDC goodies too, and it's the best thing I've seen or used for us guys carrying around our toys--- you won't regret the purchase!

The new FatBoys have a belt loop with a snap on the back that you can attach to your belt to prevent this. I don't have the sliding problem while walking about with mine but when I'm on my mountain bike (usually slouched forward and/or rocking side to side) it does tent to slide forward unless I clip it to my belt.

A buddy of mine has the old version. He solved this problem by sewing non-slide fabric strips horizontally on the back of his FatBoy. I'll see if I can get pics of this but the concept is pretty straightforward.

My only complaint so far is the stiffness of the bag but I assume it will soften with use as they don't recommend the tried/true method of tossing it into the wash.

Ya, I use it exactly the same way. It's my "dad bag" during the summer; in the winter, I can put everything I need in my ScotteVest so don't need a bag. I put in diapers and wipes, snacks, drinks, toy cars, plus dad's stuff (flashlight, cell phone, kiddie first aid kit), occasionally clip an FRS radio to one of the attachment points). I slapped a roly poly on it as well.

I also find that sometimes the bag migrates around, although sometimes it's a feature I want. When I sit down, I need to move it forward, but generally I prefer it towards my kidney. I have the old style bag without the anchor, maybe I'll try your caribiner trick.

Joe

Hey Joe. If I ever run into another dad in Silicon Valley with a FatBoy, I'll know it's you ;-)

I too like the ability to move the bag front for frequent access. So in practice, I only activate the caribiner when moving a significant distance like walking to the park. Then I unclip.

Old style bag without the anchor?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

What is this anchor?
How do I tell if mines a new or old one?
Are there any other differences?

Nice review and pictures John /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I had to order the small add on phone pouch for my little Motorola Flip Phone all of the pockets were to deep and you had to try and fish it out by the antenna stub, I put it on the shoulder strap just above the key keeper hook.

Carry style well I tried the across chest style like it is designed for but I find the shoulder bag carry mode on my right shoulder works best for me with the pack pushed around to my back.

I added a PT coin cell light to the draw string for the large inside compartment it’s like a back hole when your trying to find something down in there.

The belt loop with the snap, on the back of the fatboy, is what I meant by "anchor".
