McLux Reflector

Hi guys,

One of my part designs has now become a small run production part. I have chosen to call it the McLux reflector as it needs some form of identification and it was an integral component of my McLux flashlight:

IMHO, the 1 watt Luxeons provide an ideal amount of lumens for up close work, reading and navigation but the stock optics as well as most reflectors are designed to provide a spot beam and throw the light; some more effectively than others. In many ways, this reflector represents the antithesis of what we strive for here on CPF but in reality, a good flood is often the right choice for illumination needs. This part is the first, but won't be the last component, that we, the SkunkLight gang, will make available to CPF. We are trying to identify niche needs and applications that the "Big Boys" have not addressed.

"Big Boys?" Well thank you very much Randy. I've gotta get that peep hole in the shower fixed, apparently.

Many of you know that when I'm not stinking it up with the Skunk guys, I moonlight as Mr. Science. So I grabbed my protractor, shined the beam on my desk and measured that bugger. I come up with approximately 80°

Here's what the fan looks like. You can tell with a glance that it appears to be just shy of 90°.

I used 2 of these reflectors to replace the optics in my 2 LS/O Mag 3D DD conversion, and the result is something to behold. A real 'light up the room' job.

The NX05 optics did a so-so job of concentrating the beam, but the reflectors give off a very nice, even flood light - it changes the light from a spotlight that isn't, to a very good flood light.
Using these reflectors, you certainly won't light up that tree down the street, but use it in a room, (or any short range application - ie, walking a trail or something) and you'll get a lot more even, useable light than with the NX05, in my opinion.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Yeah, I realized this but I wanted Lambda to get credit for the cool mod as well as point people to his site. Oh well.

I'll try to get some photos and update the E2 to "Classic" adapter thread since the adapters just showed up today. Cool! I need to get some to Dat2zip so they can be made available to folks as well! Combinations are mind bogggeling. For instance, I just successfully put a 3P bezel with LA on an E1e! Some may ask why

Hello,

I have briefly experimented with SE's and HD's of both 1 and 5 watts. The stock reflector here has a reasonably smooth and shiny surface and although it is a straight cone shape as opposed to curve, it will project an image of sorts, including some artifacts. I designed this when all I had to work with was the low domes. In all cases, you basically get the same flood angle but the light distribution varies with type and wattage of LED. With the SE's and HD's I found I preferred cutting through the EN coating and putting a satin surface on the reflector. This helps blurr and mix the projected image. When time permits, I what to experiment with bead blasting the reflector and then bringing back a shine with flitz polish.

I can try to get some beam shots but I have a bunch of stuff going on and some modding and creations that are more appealing and seem to be calling me right now.
