How does everyone feel about this combo. Is this reliably safe, or at least do-able??

I am using protected 17500's and they do not trip the protection at all. Should this help ease my mind?

Not a good idea, except in short bursts only. The MN11 draws ~2.5A, and this is ~2.3C for 17500s, so it's pretty tough on the cells and you won't be getting the best out of the bulb.

I'd bore out the body and use 18500 IMR cells from AW (That's what I'm using on my L6 mc-e).

Allburger, I only use IMR cells now even with their lower capacity. Reason is the safe chemistry, safe high discharge and very fast recharge times (plus they're cheaper then AW protected li-ions and have no pcb to trip and turn the lights out on you). It's a win-win situation and you only lose out on capacity. But, since they're rechargeable, it doesn't matter. Just bring spare batteries with you.
