I've got some mini mags floating about but the (relative) cost of upgrading to LED has kept me from taking the plunge. The question, however, is that given the pros of the Mini Mag (sturdy and reliable case), is a modded Mini for around $30.00 going to be a better quality light than any other similarly small light that can be purchased in that price range given the aluminum construction and quality mod platform that the Mini presents?

I just recently did a MiniMag upgrade. I used an Inretech drop in LED and a clickie tailswitch. Cost about $20 for parts and took all of 3 minutes to swap over. This light is now MUCH more useful..focusable, and has terrific runtime on 2 AA batteries. It's definitely worth doing.

IMHO yes it's worth it. I recommend the MadMax/BadBoy and the Opalec New Beam. I prefer the MadMax Plus Q3 of the sandwiches, but even the standard sandwiches are very nice. You might want to take a look at Quickbeams site. The New Beam is the only LED that got a 5 star rating.

The lights that I think are the best for the money are the ARC LS factory seconds,PT Tec 40, Streamlight 4AA 7LED. If you want it for EDC then I would recommend the ARC LS because it's smaller. If you want to use AA batteries then I recommend a ARC LS with AA tailpac or a MiniMag with a sandwich and a mineral glass lens and a Kroll switch. If you want the cheapest good light then get a PT Tec 40. If you want the cheapest good LED light get a Streamlight 4AA 7LED. I hope this helps!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hahaha.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rant.gif

Where do you get the parts for this upgrade? I have 3 or 4 mini mags laying around that have burned up bulbs.

Thanks, John

Thanks for all the suggestions! I will ask newbie/idiot question number one, which is what is the difference between the various sandwiches listed? I get the 400/500ma is the draw (and I assume 500 is brighter but less run time), what is wide open? I can't quite figure out which is the best given the price differences..
