i have a dead spear clone (my fault) but the reflector on this thing is great very deep very throwy.and the light itself is well enough made.

so i can either leave it a paper weight or do something with it.

i can fit any combination of LED driver/board that i can buy on the www,

any suggestions about what might be a fun project?

im thinking an mc-e or p7, artifacts dont bother me as i only use lights outside.

im also open to other suggestions (yes i could restore it to its original form)

or?

it could become something unusual

ideas?

:poke:

What do you want the modded light to do?

If you want it to throw better then before, a Seoul P7 or Cree MC-E won't do that. But if you want more output and a wider hotspot, go with those two LEDs. The SST-50 could be a good choice too.

I think that light is a great budget thrower. It would make perfect sense to just upgrade it back to OEM performance. For that a 17mm - 1400mah DC-DC board from DX and an R2-WC emitter from shiningbeam should get you back up and running for. Toss in an AW IMR18650 and you should be looking at around 220L OTF, so it might even be an upgrade to the OEM performance. That light has sufficient thermal cooling to handle the full 1400mah. But even then I would only use it for spot-ON applications, keeping ON cycles to under 2-3 minutes.

A much more interesting upgrade would be an MCE and 2400mah driver, but you might loose that spot-throw beam. I am not sure what the current capacity of the tailcap switch is. You might want to research this a little first.

Hmmm.... Bryan had a bunch of really good DC-DC boards up on his site, they seem to have been removed. Their ~2500 mah MC-E board for one looked really nice. Double sided PCB, multi 7135 driver chips and just 3 modes. I think other CPF'ers bought them out.,, LOL

id like to stick with well made/reliable boards if i have to use a board.

direct drive is my preference as i can see no practical use for a low mode 'thrower'

however, blasting an aggressor with 5-700 lumens of *disorienting strobe* from 120 feet away does sound like something id want.

im guessing, with a P7 the 95/5% tight spot/flood of this lights reflector and an R2 would become 75/25 spot flood with the P7, but thats still a huge amount of light to 'throw' on strobe.

anyone know of a well made reliable driver that will run a P7 with 2 modes (100% and strobe) ?

or other ideas?

You might look into a R5 XP-G as well. Plenty of good drivers out there for LEDs in the ~1A range. It's a bit more difficult to find a good quality efficient driver for the quad die emitters and the SST50, especially if you want to use 1x 18650.
