modding the black diamond Icon.

So ive decided to do my very first mod. On a very lucky trip to REI I was able to obtain a few Black Diamond Icon headlamps that were mismarked at 12.99 each.

Since I have 2 i've decided to try my hand at moding one. What do you guys recommend as a emitter for this light? I was looking at the Cree XR-E Q5. Or would a seoul work better? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks guys.

looks like the icon heatsink is no good, some people said that the icon is a 3 watt headlamp(led) but driven at 1 watt

The Seoul, Edison Opto, or Luxeon Rebel 100 would work better then a Cree since it has the similar/same emitting pattern as the Luxeon LEDs. The Cree has a narrower emitting pattern.

I haven't modded an Icon, but I have modded a Xenix IQ (2AA) and the prior version (3AAA). It's basically a direct swap of the star (I swapped the lux for a Seoul). You could also swap the optic, although I tried a Seoul optic and switched back to the original because I couldn't see any difference. You could also put in a reflector and a lens instead fo the optic if you wanted, although that would be slightly more work.
