I've been researching the best rechargeable 123s and 18650s for few months now and just noticed for the second time that someone has referred to the distributor of AW batteries as "he". I know it's a dumb question, but is there some little fella out there named AW who is re-wrapping Panasonic batteries and shipping them out under his name?

Are AW his initials? I'm just curious. If not, do you know what AW stands for?

AW = Andrew Wan

There's more to it than just re-wrapping panasonic cells and putting on his own sticker. The protection circuit is what makes these cells suitable for use as a standalone product.

Li-Ion batteries store lots of energy in a compact package .... if they fail, they may "vent with flame".

The protection circuit is the most important (physical) safety device for these batteries, along with proper use and appropriate maintenance (of course).

Although there are certainly other quality cells available, I have only been comfortable trusting AW cells :)

AW or Callie's Kustom cells are both excellent. I've used cheap cells. They don't last long. They don't hold much energy. Sometimes they get *hot!*

My AW 2200's have a little pinhole drilled next to the "button" (or nipple) top. I don't know if other 18650 cells have this because I don't own any others. But I assumed this would aid in venting gases so the top doesn't blow.

From what I understand, all rechargeable 18650s have "button tops", but only some of them have the protruding "nipple". I'm trying to figure out now if that "button" is actually the protection circuit. Pretty cool to know the background of AW. Thanks for the info.

You are correct, it is the venting hole.

The protection circuit is at the bottom of the cell, you can see how a protected cell is constructed in my Anatomy of a Protected Battery.

the "button top" (as opposed to a protruding positive cap added on top of the "button top") is there as a connection point, but it also serves to protect the PTC protection device underneath it.

AW has also done most of the work in choosing which chinese cells are more reliable and deserving of an AW branding when there isn't a "name brand" available in that size.

The web link doesn't work for me. Are we sure they were authentic-it appears AW cells have copied extensively, and now have ways to verify authenticity.

I tried it and it worked.

The translation is a little rough but mostly understandable.

I'm trying to contact Mr. AW using the link provided above, but it doesn't seem to be working.

Is his profile still active on here? Maybe because I'm new it won't let me view his profile?
